Erin's Law Presentations

Erin’s Law, House Bill 6193, was signed into law on January 24, 2013. This requires all public schools in the State of Illinois to implement an age-appropriate sexual abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades pre-K through 12. To meet this expectation in U-46, we will implement one fifty-minute presentation for all students in grades 1-4. These presentations will take place during class time on April 10, 11 and 17.

The presentations are developmentally appropriate, interactive and aligned with learning standards. The focus of the presentation is on teaching children basic skills that will help keep them safe from dangerous or abusive situations. The following are some of the concepts that will be discussed:

  • Distinguishing different types of touch

  • Safety rules

  • Saying “NO”

  • Secrets

  • It’s not the child’s fault if someone touches him or her

  • Telling a trusted adult

If you have questions about Erin’s Law, what will be taught during the presentations or how to respond to a child who discloses abuse to you, you can find additional information within this audio PowerPoint presentation developed by our Erin’s Law Educator. If you would like more information about this presentation, please contact your building principal. (PowerPoint without audio and live links)

District Parent Cafes in Spanish

The U-46 Family Welcome Center hosts “Parent Cafes” regularly at schools throughout the District. During these cafes, parents have the opportunity to talk with other caregivers about the challenges and rewards of raising a family. They also learn about five “protective factors” — such as social connections and knowledge of parenting — that have been shown to keep children safe and families strong.
