Africa
Conservation/Endangerment
Chimpanzees are listed as endangered in the IUCN Redlist. They are endangered due to habitat loss for mining, agriculture, and forestry. The trade of bushmeat is another factor that is affecting chimpanzee populations. Currently there are laws in place that forbid the slaughter of chimpanzees. The bushmeat trade is also currently being investigated by the Bushmeat Working Group. These groups are working to save our closest relative. These animals are also wanted for investigating human origins. Chimpanzees share 98% of our genitic makeup.(IUCN)
