NEW! Message from the Principal

We had a great week of learning here at MVMS! This week, many of our clubs kicked off with their first meeting of the year, and we capped off the week with some fun games at lunch that were designed and built by our sixth grade Exploratory students! We have some exciting things planned for our students at lunch and after school over the next month, so please make sure your student is checking the Mesa Verde Canvas page for announcements.

Please take a few minutes to remind your child to be careful with their chromebooks and ensure that their chromebook is protected by the case provided by PUSD. We do have to charge for any damage to the chromebooks (e.g. water damage, broken screens, etc.). We will send emails home once we receive the repair cost from the district and the charge will be added to the student's Destiny account.

Just a reminder that there is no school next Thursday, November 11 in honor of Veteran's Day. We encourage you to take some time this week to talk to your child(ren) about the veterans in your life.

We're looking forward to a great week next week! Enjoy your weekend!

Your Proud Principal,

NEW! Meet Our Staff

Each week we will be featuring a few of our dedicated staff members in a Meet Our Staff Section. This week we'd like to introduce you to Shawn Tran and Kristin Bratt.

Malory Campbell - 7th grade Resource Specialist, 2 years at MVMS

This is my 6th year teaching, and my 3rd in PUSD. I have taught almost every grade (all except 4th and 12th) - and can say for certain that 7th is my absolute favorite! I got my undergrad in Psychology at PLNU, and went on to get my masters in teaching along with double credentials in multiple subjects and mild/mod special education. At first, I only went for my teaching credential to have an "easy" job while I pursued a career as a therapist (HA!!). But I immediately fell in love with the job, and now can't imagine doing anything other than being a special educator. I teach because I want to pay it forward and be the mentor I needed as a kid. It's what drives me to give my best even on the tough days!

In my free time, I enjoy doing woodworking projects, playing piano, or watching competitive cooking shows (my students know all about my love for Gordon Ramsay)! On the weekends, my boyfriend and I spend a lot of time "grillin and chillin" with family (one of my nephews is pictured). I think that about covers it - I'm happy to be a part of the MVMS community!

Jennifer Smith - 7th & 8th grade Resource Specialist, 1st year plus a few years subbing

Almost a lifetime ago, I received a BA in psychology from California State University, Fullerton, expecting to continue with my teaching credential. Soon after, our family moved to Texas. I lived there, ran my own home based pre-school and learned to love running in the Texas heat. I have run many races and done hikes, such as Mt. Whitney. An injury has sidelined me, but not for long. Upon moving back to San Diego, I took a job as an instructional assistant at Park Village Elementary School in an academic ASD classroom. I enjoyed it thoroughly which motivated me to return to school. I earned my credential to teach multiple subjects, K-8 and an MS in Special Education in the last 3 years. I hope to stay at Mesa Verde as long as I can. I appreciate the community, students, parents, and staff at this school. I have had 3 of my own children attend, and I can say it was a fantastic experience.

On the weekends, you will catch me at a soccer game, cross country meet, hiking or doing volunteer work with the youth at my church. I enjoy the beach, reading and spending time with my family and friends.

NEW! Date Change for Fall Fun Fest

Due to some logistical issues, we had to change the date of our upcoming Fall Fun Fest. Instead of next Friday, please save the date of Friday, December 3 from 3:30-5pm for our renamed Winter Fun Fest. All MVMS students are invited! Tickets will be $5 and will include outdoor and indoor games, snacks, and a movie. A permission slip and payment will be required. More information to come!

NEW! Running Late??

We hope all of our students are on time to school and ready to learn when the bell rings; however, we know that things can sometimes cause you to be delayed on your way to school. If your student is going to be late, please either call the attendance office or come in with your child to sign them in. Doing either of these will allow us to excuse the tardy. Thanks for your help!

Newsletter, Website, Social Media Request Form

If you have information you would like included in our weekly newsletter, on our website, or on our school's social media platforms, please use use this link to submit your request. Your request does NOT guarantee that your information will be included. Please note that we may edit your submission (content, length, etc.) but will contact you if our edits would change or remove pertinent information.

We hope this will help streamline the way we collect and are able to share information with our staff, students, and community.

No Place for Hate Club

On October 6th an interest meeting was held for students to start a No Place for Hate Club on campus this year. Students who attended or contacted Mrs. Marcotte were asked to give individual input as to which day of the week and time frame worked best for them. For the remainder of our first semester, the club will meet twice a month on the first and third Wednesdays after school (see exact dates below). We will meet from 3:15 to 3:45 pm in room 332. All students are welcome! Students who are in our ASES after school program are welcome to attend as well, just check in with ASES first. We want to build this club, our Students’ voices are important and bring forward the best ideas in how to build relationships and break down bias. Our meeting next week will focus on ideas for rolling out our school wide, No Place for Hate Pledge.

Next Meeting Dates:

  • November 3
  • November 17
  • December 1
  • December 15

Get Involved

Would you like to be a volunteer at Mesa Verde? Our volunteers at Mesa Verde are an integral part of school. Our volunteers help with events throughout the school year including after school and evening activities, classroom and club support, 6th grade Olympics, 7th grade History Faire, 8th Grade Constitutional Challenge and Promotion.

New guidance from the Poway Unified Board of Education is allowing us to expand our volunteer opportunities, effective 10/18/21. Volunteers must be fully-vaccinated and show proof of vaccination or show proof of a negative PCR COVID test within the 72 hours prior to volunteering. If you would like more information, please contact Natalie Reyes at (858) 538-5478 or nreyes@powayusd.com.

Sign up here if you would like to hear more.

Library Volunteers

The Mesa Verde library is looking for volunteers to help in the library during the lunch periods (Mon/Tues/Thur/Fri 11:00 to 12:40 and Wednesdays 11:40 to 1:00) once we are permitted to have volunteers again. We need help assisting and supervising students during our busy lunch periods. Volunteers may choose which day of the week and how often you would like to come in (once a week, every other week, once a month, etc.) If you are interested please contact Heather Ryan: hryan@powayusd.com. We will collect this information now to have it in preparation for when volunteers are allowed.

If you are not sure if you are an approved volunteer, contact Natalie Reyes at (858) 538-5478 or nreyes@powayusd.com.

Job Opportunities

Do you enjoy working with students? Mesa Verde has a few job opportunities in the classroom and in the office such as noon duties and Instruction Assistants ranging from 2 to 6 hours each day. If you or someone you know would be interested, click here for more information or to apply.

Lost & Found

Has your child lost anything at MV? If so, please have them take a look in the lost and found. MV’s lost and found is accessible to students and located in between the health and main office entry in a large metal cabinet. Any special/personal items like retainers, glasses, jewelry, house keys, headphones, electronics, etc. are inside the office with Mrs. Rinehart. At the end of each month, any items that are left in the lost and found will be donated or discarded. Please encourage your student to pick up any lost items. As a reminder, please do your best to label all items to assist your student in locating them if lost.

Feeling Sick? Not Sure What To Do...

Call Mesa Verde's Health Tech at (858) 538-5478, ext. 3107. For more information, click here.

Checking Out Your Student Early

If your student needs to leave early from school, please send a note with your student. Notes should be given to the Attendance secretary in the Administration Office before school. Calling the school in advance, or sending a note, will prevent delays for you (such as trying to get your student while they are running on the lower field) and will help us to minimize interruptions to the classrooms. If you schedule a last minute appointment you may call the Attendance Hotline @ (858) 538-5692 to have an off campus pass sent to your student.

When writing a note please indicate the following:

  • Your student's first and last name
  • Their grade
  • The time your student needs to leave school
  • Whether or not your student will return that day

Please meet your child at the Attendance desk to be signed out at the time of departure. Be prepared to show your identification when checking out your child. If your student returns to school after being picked up early, please have him/her check back in at the Attendance desk before heading to class.

Attendance Hotline

Call the Attendance Hotline at (858) 538-5692 if your child is absent from school.
