Notes from the Principal (Mrs. Boyd)
As a parents/guardians, we want to try to help our kids when they come home and tell us about conflicts at school. And, it's hard, because we only have one perspective (our child's). How we handle conflict is a big part of character development; we want kids to be assertive, consider various perspectives in a conflict, and problem-solve a path forward.
When helping your child develop strong character skills when dealing with conflict you don't see, here are a few things to consider/try:
- Start by having an emotionally neutral response, saying something like, "Huh, that sounds strange. Tell me more."
- Encourage your child to consider the perspectives of other people involved. "What might ___ have been thinking or feeling?" "What about ___?"
- Ask, "How do you think you might solve this problem? What steps could you take?"
And, if things seem strange or off, loop the teachers in. We want our kids to know that we're all on the same page, working for them to grow academically and socially/emotionally.
Four years ago, with parent and staff input, we adopted the core values of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, CONFIDENCE, AND THINKING. We continue to be committed to developing each of these traits in each of our learners. Thank you for your partnership.
Character Education
Our Peaceful School Bus Program is designed to help create community and responsibility among students riding the bus. We’ve seen positive results on the bus since implementing this program. Four times a year, students on the same bus will meet together during the school day with an Edgewood staff member. Students will get to know each other and learn how to act responsibly on the bus. These Bus Group Meetings, along with our lessons in guidance about empathy, kindness and bully prevention will hopefully lead to more respectful behavior towards others.
As a parent/guardian, you have an important role in this program. If your child reports a problem on the bus to you, please let us know. We may also need to talk to you if your child’s behavior is a concern on the bus, as a means to help them learn to be responsible members of their bus route group. We encourage you to ask your child about bus expectations and what they are doing to help create a Peaceful School Bus. Thank you so much for your continued support as we work together to promote character traits in all settings and to get our kids home happy and safe!
Edgewood Home and School Association (our version of PTO)
You're welcome at any of our meetings; please consider coming. We could use your skills and talents so that we can continue to sponsor events and experiences that our kids expect and love (like dances, field trips, the 5K Picnic, etc.).
The fall fundraiser is currently going on. Funds from that will go towards our regular budget (which funds things like field trips and picnics and teacher lunches), and also towards our big goal for the year--a new digital sign!
We have two additional "sales" that go on not for profit, but to provide benefit to our students. The first is a spiritwear sale, which will happen from 10/7-10/20. All orders are made online. Check your email 10/7! The second is the Bookfair, which will be here from 10/16-10/23.
We hope to see you soon!
Reminders about attendance:
2) Students should NOT be left unsupervised before 8:30 am.
