Strong Girls - A NEW Type of Afterschool Program
A program sponsored by the Women’s Intersport Network for Kansas City (WIN for KC) and the University of Kansas Sport and Exercise Psychology Lab called Strong Girls. Strong Girls is an afterschool program that has middle school girls in Lawrence come to campus on Wednesday afternoons for a life skills and physical activity program. Each middle school student is paired with a KU female student across the semester, and they have a chance to build a strong relationship.
The curriculum, developed by doctors Mary Fry and Theresa Brown, is centered around creating a caring and supportive environment that helps each student feel safe, welcomed, supported, and focused on her own personal effort and improvement as a gauge of success. We relaunched the Strong Girls program this Fall and have more KU leaders signed up than middle school students. I’m reaching out to you so that you might pass along this letter and information to any student or parent you think might have interest. The program is free, and Boys & Girls Club provides transportation (even if the students are not part of Boys & Girls Club any other day). The students are dropped off at KU’s Robinson Center each Wednesday at 3pm and picked up at 5pm to return to the B&GC Teen Center on Haskell or parents can pick up their kids directly from KU.
We are recruiting middle school students from all over Lawrence and would be happy to provide information to you or any parent that you feel might have interest in the program. The theme for this first semester has been “Learning to Take Good Care of Yourself.” If parents are interested, they can contact Dr. Mary Fry at KU (mfry@ku.edu) or Hally Piontek at WIN for KC (hpiontek@sportkc.org). Here’s the link to our Strong Girls website where parents can register their girls: Stronggirlswin.org. Also, attached is a flyer with additional information about the benefits of getting involved with Strong Girls!
