In the past few weeks we have been working with Fire, local and State police to make sure that our health and safety procedures are up to date and all of our staff and students are safe in the event of an emergency.
As you will have noticed, I email all families immediately after a drill to let them know that it has taken place. I also email families immediately afterwards should a real procedure take place.
Please note that in the event of a reunification drill/ incident, where a care providers are called to collect students from the school/ relocation site, we will use student information that families return at the start of the year. Senior Capstone: Final Presentations have been taking place this week!
What is a Capstone project?
The Senior Capstone course is a culminating academic experience that takes place during the fall semester. All seniors take the course and learn how to direct their own learning on a topic of their choice to encourage you to think critically, solve challenging problems, and develop skills such as
oral communication, public speaking, research skills, media literacy, teamwork, planning, self-sufficiency, and goal setting—i.e., skills that will help prepare you for college, modern careers, and adult life! Capstone projects also encourage students to connect their learning to community issues or problems, and to integrate outside-of-school learning experiences, including activities such as interviews, scientific observations, creative events or internships. Over the course of the semester students propose, design, research, execute, present, and reflect on their project. All students also take part in the Capstone Presentation Event which is attended by the community at large. This is a team-taught course with a number of faculty directly involved.
All students in grades 9,10 & 11 will have the chance to see current Capstone project presentations on January 23rd during our Capstone Showcase morning for students. Some of these will be recorded and shared online. Additionally, some seniors will be invited to present their Capstone projects to the school committee at their February meeting.
Capstone Showcase
Join us… Showcase of Senior Capstone Projects on January 23rd
Please join us for a showcase of this year’s senior Capstone projects on January 23rd. Drop in sometime between 8-9:30am to wander through our three gallery spaces. Students will be sharing their work and available for questions and discussion. At 9:30am, the whole high school will gather in the auditorium for performance projects - theater, music, and film. This event is open to the community; please sign in at the main office when you arrive.
Celebrate our Teachers!
WE ARE MOHAWK TRAIL
The most important part of a classroom experience isn't the setting or course materials, it is the talent of the teacher in front of the student.

Elvis will be back in the building!!!!
Come and support Jacob G as he performs as Elvis on January 25th at MTRS!
Newsflash:
Solar Panel Project underway
Solect Energy's work began over the winter break installing solar panels on the south facing roofs of Mohawk Trail Regional School. When completed, the project is expected to:
a.) Produce about two-thirds of the Mohawk Trails’ electricity
b.) Reduce the school’s electric bill by over 50%
c.) Reduce school budget expenses
Solect is building and will operate and maintain the solar panel system at no cost to the district, then sell the power generated back to the district at a rate that is substantially less than what the district currently pays. The rate would be fixed for 20 years. The project is expected to be fully operational by September.
At the forefront of the decision to go solar was the School Committee’s recognition of the importance of sustainable, renewable energy to the district’s students and member communities. The cost savings are also critical as the district looks to keep its budgets with the means of local taxpayers.
“This is one very tangible way we can show our students that we care about their future even beyond Mohawk Trail,” said Mohawk Trail Superintendent Sheryl Stanton. “The construction and operation of the system will also provide many hands-on learning opportunities for our students.”

Athletics News
It has been an extremely busy week for our student-athletes at Mohawk Trail! While the weather was not ideal, we were still able to squeeze in all of our games and events!
Leading off, our Alpine Ski teams absolutely dominated their competition in their first races of the season! On the girl’s side, Addie Loomis and Emmy Sisum placed first and second in runaway fashion, while Mae Hoff and Sophia Slocik-Gritzner finished fifth and sixth, respectively. As a team, the ladies finished almost 37 SECONDS ahead of 2nd place Minnechaug, and all of our girls finished in the top 25 in the 78 racer field!!!
Our gentlemen racers, led by winner Weston Den Ouden, also came away with a victory in the 14 team field! While Den Ouden was the only Mohawk Trail finisher in the top 5, six of the next eight finishers were wearing Warrior bibs! All told, more than half of the top 13 finishers were wearing blue and gold! It’s fair to say that we should all pay very close attention to our ski teams this year as it appears the sky's the limit!
On the Nordic side, our skiers finally know when their next race will be! Coach Mark Pollard will be taking his crew to Butternut Mountain on Tuesday, January 17th to host the 2nd PVIAC race of the season! At this point in the schedule, we will travel to wherever the white stuff is!
It was a successful weekend for our Lady’s Indoor Track team as they picked up their first victory of the season against Sci-Tech at Smith College! Senior Savannah Simmons took home three individual victories, while Sophia Goodnow, Avery Johnston, and Maddie Lamorie finished 1,2,3 in the shotput! This young, inexperienced squad is getting better and better every week!
SWAG SHOPS RE-OPENING!
Next week we will be re-opening our Mohawk Trail swag shops! Links will be added to next week’s newsletter, and the shops will be open for two weeks. We will be offering exclusive MT Athletic gear, along with sport specific shops! Make sure you pick up that sweatshirt or hat you have been itching to get your hand on, and go out and support our Mohawk Trail athletes!!!
