Mandarin Immersion-Week 3, Aug 17-21
Green and Blue Class
Math
MODULE 1 Sums and Differences to 10
Topic B Counting On from Embedded Numbers & Topic C Addition Word Problems
Topic B continues the process of having the students compose and decompose. They describe put together situations (pictured to the right) with number bonds and count on from the first part to totals of 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 . As they represent all the partners of a number, they reflect and see the decompositions, “Look at all these ways to make 8. I can see connections between them.”
Through dialogue, they engage in seeing both the composition invited by the put together situation and the decomposition invited by the number bonds. Expressions are another way to model both the stories and the bonds, the compositions and the decompositions.
In Topic C, students interpret the meaning of addition from adding to with result unknown or putting together with result unknown story problems by drawing their own pictures and generating solution equations. Advancing beyond the Kindergarten word problem types, students next solve add to with change unknown problems such as, “Ben has 5 pencils. He got some more from his mother. Now, he has 9 pencils. How many pencils did Ben get from his mother?” These problems set the foundation early in the module for relating addition to subtraction in Topic G
Science
Unit 1: Light and Sound
Guiding question: What do we see when we look into a place where all the outside light is blocked from getting in?
Student design a solution using classroom available materials to (co)design and build (a device) a smaller scale classroom and use it to make observations to use in an evidence-based explanation of where the light is needed to see things. We plan and carry out an investigation to produce data and use our observations (patterns) as evidence to support the claim that light is needed to see things.

Math
MODULE 1 Sums and Differences to 10
TOPIC C:Addition Word Problems
- Lessons 13:
Tell put together with result unknown, add to with result unknown, and add to with change unknown stories from equations.
- Lessons 14-15:
Count on up to 3 more using numeral and 5-group cards and fingers to track the change.
- Lessons 16:
Count on to find the unknown part in missing addend equations such as 6 + __ = 9. Answer, “How many more to make 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10?”
TOPIC E:The Commutative Property of Addition and the Equal Sign
- Lessons 17:
Understand the meaning of the equal sign by pairing equivalent expressions and constructing true number sentences.
Science
We will analyze Data using observations (from photos) to describe relationships between design objects that people use to try to block out sunlight and the patterns we see on the surfaces under/behind them that provide evidence that they are blocking light. We will plan and Carry Out an investigation collaboratively to produce data to determine whether any type of material will create a shadow . We will analyze data to describe patterns in the data (from the investigation above) to determine if there is a relationship between whether a material makes a shadow and whether it blocks light.

Curriculum night ,August 27th.
Curriculum Night is August 27th. Curriculum Night's purpose is to provide parents an overview of the curriculum, daily schedules, and daily procedures. Below you will find the schedule for each grade level. Teachers will email the class Zoom links.
K-6- Two sessions will be available with classroom teachers. Both sessions will contain the same information, and you will only need to attend one session. Curriculum night with the special area teachers will occur before the early classroom session. If you choose to attend the later classroom session, you can attend the special areas first. Please submit any questions in the "Question Link" below. If you have questions pertaining to individual student's questions, please contact the teacher. We will also have parent/teacher conferences later in the year.
To most efficiently use the Zoom session times and prevent presentation interruptions, Zoom sessions will be muted, and the chat will be disabled. We ask that you please submit your questions at the link below. We will disseminate the questions to the teacher and grade-level to incorporate into their presentations. If you have questions pertaining to individual student's questions, please contact the teacher. We will also have parent/teacher conferences later in the year.
