Bilingual Education Department
CORONA VIRUS Update Edition April 6, 2020
Our Mission
MISSION STATEMENT: The Bilingual Education Department offers research-based programs and exemplary instruction for multilingual learners in the Framingham Public Schools. FPS has a diverse student population and currently instructs students from over 70 countries who speak approximately 72 languages. We are committed to offering the highest quality of educational experiences to all students through language development programs in English, Spanish and Portuguese that foster grade-level social and academic language proficiency and mastery of state content-area standards, while simultaneously building on and celebrating students' cultural, linguistic and educational backgrounds, practices, and experiences.
Thank you, Gracias, Obrigada, Grazie Mille!
I am appreciative of everyone's efforts during this crisis. I have included links in this newsletter to pertinent information as we move into the next few weeks. Be well and safe everyone!
Support for our families
With the extended closing of schools, all of us are preoccupied with our most vulnerable students who depend on schools for at least two meals. As a result, please see this communication from FPS on the coordination of efforts in the city and with local organizations to provide meals to our students. Info has been widely shared through Blackboard, social media, city and district websites and also shared to our bilingual partners. Please feel free to share out to local organizations that you are associated with. If you are concerned with any of our families accessing these resources, please communicate to your school principal or let our office know so that we can reach out. I wanted to share this picture from one of our students at Barbieri. Thinking of everyone.

DESE Guidance on Remote Learning for English Learners
Strategy #1: Collaboration between core content and ESL teachers.
Strategy #2: ESL instruction is still a required component of all ELE programs.
Strategy #3: Amplify English Learners’ voices.
Strategy #4: Chunk content instruction into smaller pieces for English Learners.
Strategy #5: Remain flexible with pacing.
Strategy #6: Use online tools and applications to link to the main lessons of the content classroom teachers. ESL teachers will focus on linking vocabulary support and comprehension skills necessary for content classes.
We will update our district guidance document to align to the DESE recommendations.
