March 2021

This Is Where It All Began. . .

Here we are. A year from when it all began. March is a month that will live in infamy thanks to COVID - 19. But this March already has many more positives. For one, kids are in school! Second, vaccines for COVID - 19 are being widely distributed. And lastly, we are still making our PTA presence known!

I know I say it every month, but I'm gonna keep saying it, "Our units are truly amazing!" So many awesome events and unique ways to raise funds have come from you and it shows the true resilience of Livonia PTA! We continue to stay positive and we continue to push through! We don't see March as a bummer month. We see it as Reading Month, we see it as book fairs, we see it as another month to support our school, students, families, and staff!

Keep doing what you do. We see you and we support you!

PTA Shout Out!

This month's PTA shout-out goes to Council's very own Debbie Yates! Debbie wears many hats on the LPTSA Council, but the one that shines the brightest is her Diversity and Inclusion hat! Over the past several months Debbie has worked hard to educate our families and community on the many ways we can celebrate and learn about many diverse groups. Black history month, National Women's history month, and World Down Syndrome Day, are just a few! Along the way, Debbie provides information on many books, websites, videos, and other sources for families to learn more! As we all know, PTA supports ALL children and Debbie is a shining example of a Superstar advocate! Thank you Debbie for all that you do!

Bylaws Submissions

Well units, It's that time again! To submit your bylaws to MI PTA! If you don't recall or were not a board member, in 2018 MI PTA made changes to their bylaws which required all units and Councils to make changes to theirs. Every 3 years we are required to submit our bylaws to MI PTA! So, if you forgot, or if you are new, here is what you need to do:

1. Present your current bylaws at your next meeting. If there are any recommended amendments, they must be presented.

2. Said bylaws (with or without amendments) must be posted for 30 days for the membership.

3. At the next meeting following the 30 days, motion to approve your bylaws. The whole process must be documented in the meeting minutes.

4. Once your bylaws have been approved, upload them into Memberhub for MI PTA to review. You must also submit your meeting minutes documenting the approval of your bylaws to MI PTA as well. You can upload them in Memberhub in the same place you upload the bylaws. Just please make sure you label the document as your meeting minutes for approved bylaws.

Now some of you may have amended your bylaws this year already and that's ok. If you did not submit your bylaws to MI PTA after your approved amendments then please do so now and make sure to include the meeting minutes where said amendments were approved. Once submitted, your 3 year clock starts again.

Membership

Can you believe Spring Break is next week?! We may be getting close to the end of the school year, but you can still keep your membership numbers climbing! Is your unit getting close to your membership number from last year? We have two schools that have reached that goal, and a few more who are really close. Congratulations to Johnson and Cooper for achieving and exceeding last year's PTA enrollment numbers! It's never too late to add new members. Let's see those numbers continue to grow! Don't forget to send Michigan PTA their dues for all new PTA members by the 28th of every month.

Virtual "March is Reading Month" for Webster!

As with everything this year, our usual activities are a bit different, including March is Reading Month. We still wanted to promote reading and have some fun and connect with families, so we worked out some virtual ways to do so.

We sponsored a month-long reading tracking for students that featured a castle and stone wall. For every 30 minutes read, students could fill in one stone in the wall. Once the wall was completed, they could send a pic to the PTA mailbox to be entered to win an Amazon gift card. One student per grade will win at the end of the month.

We also hosted a virtual author night for all families that featured Vic Jackson, author of “Crossing Lake Michigan in a Bathtub: A True Story”. He talked about his 1969 maritime adventure, how he wrote the book about it as well as answered questions. We had over 50 families attend and had lots of questions.

We also planned a Virtual Family Night that featured book-themed activities like a virtual escape room, trivia, and more.

It was a great way to connect with families and celebrate the month!

Kennedy's 'Egg'citing Fundraiser!

Kennedy Elementary PTA is egging houses! We have put on our bunny ears and are delivering eggs filled with treats and trinkets to families' yards. Families pre-ordered eggs to be delivered and scattered in their yard on March 25th or 26th, weather permitting. Eggs will be scattered in the yards by 3 pm so students will have a fun surprise after school. We have also added options for door delivery or for eggs to be sent home with students. There is also the added thrill that 3 lucky yards will find a prized egg with an extra special prize for the whole family. This has been an ‘egg’citing fundraiser and an ‘egg’cellent way to stay engaged with our families. We have had an overwhelming response to this event and we are up to our ears in eggs! We know there will be many happy families!

Churchill Earns with Memberhub Givebacks!

Givebacks? Perhaps you've been hearing this term and wondering what this funny-sounding name really is. At Churchill, we wondered the same thing and decided one day to just start. We've now earned $120 this year from Givebacks with great potential for more!

I highly recommend every PTA in Livonia set up Givebacks - it's easy - and let MemberHub help you make money! Full disclosure - I was nervous to try it too! I'm here for you - email me at patty7088@gmail.com and we can walk through this together.

Here are the basic steps:

1. Click on the Givebacks link on the left side of MemberHub dashboard (see Photo).

2. Scroll through the offers on the Givebacks page and add them to your store. At Churchill, I added just one offer to get started. Once I was more familiar with Givebacks, I started adding more offers. I recommend starting with the disposable masks - those have been very popular for our sales!

3. Choose an offer to add to your store. Each offer tells you the current price - you can see masks are currently a VERY good deal! And the Giveback is at least $8 per order. Adds up quick!

4. Accepted offers will immediately be available on your storefront for shoppers to purchase and your organization will start making money with each purchase.

5. MemberHub gives you an email template to share with your PTA. This template can be shared on social media and then ANYONE can buy from this link. You can really start to earn some easy money!

Churchill Serves Cake!

With Founder's Day this year being a bit different, Churchill PTSA still wanted to make it special for PTSA Staff members by giving them cake - because what is Founder's Day without cake?!?

We purchased mini bumpy style cakes from Awrey's on Farmington Road. Each cake came packaged in a white bakery box. These are readily available in the store at Awrey's. If you have a large order, we suggest contacting them in advance. Each cake was $0.99 and so rich and delicious - just can't beat that deal!

Then our VP, Alicia Densel, created some decorative labels that made these little boxes so fancy! We delivered these on the day that Founder's Day was supposed to take place. We delivered them after school during a staff meeting so staff would have their cake on their way home. Many staff were so delighted to receive cake! They said it brightened their week :)

The Fran Anderson MI PTA Scholarship

From MI PTA:

We have some pretty amazing students in Michigan PTAs! We can't wait to hear from them. Please pass this on to your graduating leaders and advocates! Application deadline is April 15, 2021.

https://www.michiganpta.org/scholarship.html

The Fran Anderson Michigan PTA Scholarship was created as a way to recognize high school seniors who have demonstrated leadership and advocacy skills through participation in PTA. A minimum of one $1,000 scholarship is awarded each year and additional scholarships and/or scholarships of varying amounts are awarded based on available funds.

The late Fran Anderson, past Michigan PTA President, always demonstrated the highest level of advocacy for all children and her leadership continues to have a positive impact on Michigan PTA. To honor her many years of being a champion for children, the scholarship was named in her honor.

Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee comprised of Michigan PTA Past Presidents based on the following criteria: PTA/PTSA involvement, essay, community service, additional activities, academics and letters of recommendation.
