Reminders:
- Please make sure your child has completed their math assignment each day. Students usually get time in class to work on their assignment, if not it becomes homework.
- Check out your child's planner to see what they are learning each day!
- Want to know how your child is doing at school? Look at the Pirate Privilege chart located at the front of their planner. This is where letters are taken for behavior, incomplete/late work, and tardiness.
What's Happening?
Math
In math, we started a new topic on multiplying fractions and mixed numbers. Students will learn how to use models and the standard algorithm to multiply:
- a whole number by a fraction
- a fraction by a fraction
- a mixed number by a mixed number
If you feel your student is struggling on math concepts, or you wish for them to have extra practice, have them get on Prodigy. Log-in username and passwords were sent out last week to each student. If you are not familiar with Prodigy, it is an interactive game that most students enjoy to play that helps students practice math concepts! Click here to go to the website.
DO NOT FORGET - Students should be getting on Reflex Math at least 3 times a week until they achieve 100 percent fluency. Once they reach 100 percent fluency, they only have to get on once a week. Click here to go to the website.
ELA
In Reading we are continuing work with Main Idea and Details. Students will be testing over this skill next week. Please check in with your child to make sure he/she is keeping up with their readers responses each week. This is a big part of their reading grade and helps to prepare for the work they will have to do in ELA next year in middle school.
In writing students are publishing their persuasive essays. The class overall has worked very hard researching and coming up with supporting evidence to support their claim, as well researching the counter argument. Please look for information coming out soon regarding a publishing party. With all the snow days we are a little behind schedule on writing, but my hope is that these papers will be graded in time to be recorded on the report cards!
Science
We just finished up learning about Earth's oceans and took a test on Friday. Next we will be studying the how humans impact Earth's systems. Students will:
- Describe Earth's natural resources
- Identify where energy on Earth comes from
- Explain how human activities affect Earth's resources and environments
- Describe ways to protect Earth's resources and environments
