THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - February 10, 2020
The Principal's Corner
Dear HCS Families:
HCS has a new Spelling Bee Champion – 4th grader, Isabel Fry! To earn the title, Isabel had to out-spell twenty-one other students. Now, as HCS’s Champion, Isabel will compete in the VT State-level Spelling Bee in mid-March. Her winning words? Talcum, plus her challenge word, Macrophage.
Honorable Mentions to our runners-up: (alphabetically)
Jackson Hayes, Stephanie Miskavage, and Veronica Miskavage
Kudos are due for ALL of our competitors!
It takes guts to spell aloud, on the spot, into a microphone, and compete against over twenty students. Though it’s a bummer that sometimes it just comes down to which words you happen to be given – or whether your brain and your mouth are in sync, each of these students knows that it’s worth a shot and makes for adrenaline-filled fun along the way.
8th Graders: Lysandra Bosmenier, Luke Broussard, Veronica Miskavage
7th Graders: Pat Frazier, Jackson Hayes, Vivian Volzer, Annalise Wood
6th Graders: Addie Baker, Sophie Frost, Aidin Hodzic, Emma Main, Stephanie Miskavage, Tucker Polli, Piper Thompson, William Wallace
5th Graders: Theo Broussard, Willow Hayes, Jack Snyder
4th Graders: Isabel Fry, Jordan Kramer-Nison, Dylan Lutters,Ellie White
Congratulations!
Warmly,
Suzan and John

School Counselors Celebrate During National School Counseling Week 💟
National School Counseling Week, sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), was celebrated from Feb. 3–7, 2020, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
“School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, postsecondary options and social/emotional skills,” said Kwok-Sze Wong, Ed.D., ASCA executive director. “School counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success.”
More than 100,000 school counselors nationwide participated in the week’s festivities. Many schools hosted special events and activities to call attention to the countless benefits of a comprehensive school counseling program. Parents or community members with specific questions can contact the HCS school counselors or look on ASCA’s website, www.schoolcounselor.org.

Do You Have Family Rituals? Family Routine vs. Family Ritual
There is a lot of research on the importance of routine and ritual in children’s lives. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, family routines and rituals are “powerful organizers of family life that offer stability during times of stress and transition.” Search Institute found that meaningful traditions are a core family strength that predicts stronger outcomes for kids. Researchers point to the importance of rituals at family meals if you can swing them, cultural traditions and holidays, reunions, or birthdays.
It’s important to note that routines and rituals often overlap but they aren’t exactly the same thing. Routine is about creating some kind of dependable structure (to the degree possible!) so kids know what to expect. Ritual is about a repeated, simple set of actions or words that hold emotions, make meaning, and mark significance. Family rituals are sometimes referred to as the “glue that holds families together.”
