CHEW
PLEASE HELP OUT.........Childhood hunger in Onslow County is a growing concern. CHEW (Children Healthy Eating on Weekends) is a program that assist children in Onslow by providing a backpack filled with child friendly foods which are easy to prepare. The CHEW program serves 560 students in Onslow County schools and 96 of those students are here in the Richlands area.
March 25 - March 29, Richlands High School will be collecting pudding cups for the CHEW program. We are asking that each student try to bring at least one package of pudding cups. Our goal is to collect 900 pudding cups. CHEW uses approximately 400 pudding cups a month. Please help the students in our community by donating. All donations remain in the Richlands area.
The 3rd period class that collects the most puddings will receive Dairy Queen gift cards valued at $5 for each student in the class.
PLTW
Students from Richlands High School's Project Lead the Way – Civil Engineering and Architecture class, visited the Onslow County Museum this week. Mrs. Lisa Whitman-Grice made a presentation on the “Architectural History of Onslow County." In her presentation, students saw many architectural styles that were studied in class, come to life through the past history of our county. Onslow County has a rich history of architectural styles. Many of these styles can be seen in the current museum exhibit, “Faces and Place." This exhibit has many paintings that tell the story of Onslow County and its people. The aim of this exhibit is to provide a visual interpretation of the county’s story using art created and collected by its residents. For more information on the exhibit, visit the museum website at http://www.onslowcountync.gov/841/Changing-Gallery .

AP Calculus
Last week, AP Calculus with Mrs. Williams explored the topic of polar graphs and the connection between polar functions and trigonometric functions. Students first graphed a trigonometric function and then used a non-toxic wax and yarn combination called wikki stix to place arrows from the x axis of the graph to the maximum or minimum point on the trig graph. Students then could pick up and move the wikki stix to a new graph to form the petals of a polar graph. The students had a lot of fun with this activity and exploring the connections from previous math courses to Calculus.
Chemestry Honors/ AP Environmental Science
Next year RHS will be offering a yearlong pairing of Chemistry Honors and AP Environmental Science (or APES). (Students who have already taken Chemistry can still register for APES).
AP Environmental Science is a hand's on elective science class that can earn you college credit!
In the course, we study the relationships between humans and our environment, looking at many of the consequences the earth has experienced because of our impact. While it incorporates all branches of science, it is very different from Earth and Environmental Science, because we are studying what is currently happening and the role we play in fixing it.
If you have any questions about AP Environmental Science or would like to pickup a brochure please feel free to come and talk to Mrs. Allgood (in Room 1112) about it!
