Soaring to Skyview
A newsletter for 4th graders
The countdown to Skyview...
All 4th graders received information about Summer Reading for Skyview. Your task is to read two books over the summer - one fiction and one non-fiction. Choose books that interest you! You will complete an organizer for each of these books. Copies of summer reading handouts are also available on the Skyview website: click here
We look forward to seeing you at our Scavenger Hunt Open House - Monday, August 20th from 6 - 7:30 pm.

Pillars of characters:
By : Jillian McTamney - 5-Craig
Here at Skyview we have 6 pillars. The first one is trustworthiness. You can show trustworthiness by always being honest. This way everyone will know they can trust you. The second pillar is respect. You can show respect by letting someone borrow a pencil or helping them when they are having trouble with something, etc.. Respect is also listening to others and following directions. There are many ways you can show respect. The third pillar is caring. A way you can show caring is for example, if someone is hurt, take them to the nurse’s office or telling a teacher. We are almost there but not yet - the fourth pillar is responsibility. You can show this by always doing your homework. The fifth but not the last pillar is fairness. You can be fair by always sharing with people. Now, finally, the last pillar, citizenship. You can show citizenship by being kind to your friends and making your school a better place. If you do any of these things then you can get something that is called a pillarific slip. If you get one they will announce your name on the announcements. I hope this made you feel more comfortable about Skyview and excited.
Being an UPSTANDER
By: Ethan Cooke
Here at Skyview we believe in being an Upstander!!! Being an upstander means that you help someone if they are being bullied, instead of just standing by and doing nothing. If you see someone being bullied don’t be a Bystander...be an Upstander and help them! If the bully does not stop, go tell a teacher or another adult. Being an Upstander will lead to the possibility to become friends with the victim. The bully will stop and probably not bully that person again. Being a Bystander, and just watching the situation rather than doing something, won’t help anyone. Don't be that guy. Also if you act in any way against the victim or hurt the bully, you'll get in trouble too. Two Wrongs don't make a right!
Be an Upstander, not a Bystander!
Making Friends at Skyview
HI welcome to Skyview. I’m Matty I'm on team Comets. I will be telling you about making friends from new schools who are in your class. Here at Skyview all 4 elementary schools come together. There might be 2 or 3 kids in your class who went to your school or who you might know from sports and prep and all that stuff. You may see kids you don’t know. When you see a few kids you don't know just hanging out at recess and you want to play or hang around with them you can just go up introduce yourself and learn their names and build a friendship. It’s very cool and exciting making friends from other schools!

The Skyview Cafeteria
By: Luke Navarette and Isaac McGee
The Cafeteria is a big area filled with sets of chairs for you to eat a variety of food. This is a time where you can eat and fill your stomach in order to get ready for the rest of the day. You can also sit with your homeroom, or even with another team if you’re good. Even at the end of the year you could possibly sit outside as a reward for good behavior. The cafeteria is also a great place to meet new friends when you first come to Skyview. Lunch is the perfect time to sit, relax and enjoy some time with your friends. It is important to be respectful and appropriate in the cafeteria, below are some ways to do that...
1.Have fun talking with your friends, but NO yelling.
2.Eat your own food, no sharing Food
3.Dispose trays(If trays are disposable!)
4.At the end of lunch clean your table.
5. Always be respectful to the cafeteria staff.
Homework
By Mianna Ly - 5-Craig
Homework is important in 5th grade and it is a big part of your grade. Here are some examples of what you can do to make it easier: 1. Keep a clean and organized binder 2. Use your time wisely because there are a lot of opportunities that you can do your homework at school (Flex, 8th period, and in class sometimes). 3. Find a quiet place that will not distract you to do your homework at home. 4. Make sure to do your homework or else it will hurt your grade. 5. Always bring your assignment book ( A book where you write your homework in) to your classes so you can write your homework in it so you don’t forget what your homework is. Homework helps you practice what you are learning. You will have homework but if you follow my advice then it’ll be no problem for you!
Music at Skyview
By: Truly Sommer - 5-Craig
Here at Skyview if you play an instrument you go to lessons once a week and music 8th periods every other day. For each band or orchestra lesson you go at a different time each week.. For your lesson group you go by group(which are classified by a letter or two) .For your lesson you may be missing a test or something else important, so you can reschedule it. If you are in chorus you don’t have lessons you just have 8th period rehearsals. If you are in more than one music group, like say you were in orchestra, band, and chorus, then you have to look if the letter day is green or yellow to see which music ensemble you go to. If you miss any lessons, you will get points off for your attendance grade and if you miss any 8th periods you get points off also. If you keep missing 8th periods over and over again you may not be able to play at the next concert. For concerts, we play in the Arcola auditorium during the day and once at night .Being in music at Skyview is really fun, but you have some responsibilities. I hope you can join in on the fun next year!
Lockers!!!
Lockers may not be as bad as you think.
Most students worry about lockers when coming into Skyview. It’s actually pretty easy to learn! It may take you a couple of tries, but once you try it about 3 times, you’ll get the hang of it. It’s actually so simple, sometimes my friends and I race to see how quickly we could open our lockers!
At the beginning of school, the teachers give you a card that says your locker number and your locker code. The card tells you a step-by-step description of how to open your locker.
If your locker ever gets jammed, or you can’t open it, don’t panic. Your friends or the janitor will help you.
