McKay High School Weekly Newsletter

Week of April 3 - 7

Message from the Admin Team

Welcome Back! Our hope is that the well-deserved break served students and families with some time to rest and recuperate from the school year and all that it brings. As we enter into this first week of April it is important student's get back to their routines. This week at school teachers will re-start units of learning, while coaches will continue to prepare for what will be a busy few weeks. As an Admin team we are beginning to look to the future, but not before we celebrate the outstanding accomplishments from this school year. This week you will see that for a few of our students the break served as another opportunity to add to our school's 2022-23 resume of outstanding performances. We are looking forward to continuing to add to that list before the school year is complete. Thank you to all of our families that return to their routines of supporting our students.

Take care

Shout Outs (Academic, Athletics, Activities)

This week we would like to feature the recent successes of two groups of McKay students. Both of these groups have been dedicated all year to perfecting their opportunities here at McKay. Prior spring break our first group the McKay Future Farmers of America chapter were able to compete at the local and state levels. Below you can read about the accomplishments that they were able to achieve. Our second group (Scots Apella) have been working to perfect their performances, and this past week this special group of students was able to see the fruits of their labor. You will read about their most recent accomplishment, and what they have in store for the future. Both groups are a great example of what McKay's students are all about.

  • At the beginning of March, our FFA Chapter had a great opportunity to host a National FFA officer who conducted a workshop looking at the impact goals can have and how to work towards reaching those goals. Following 19 members traveled to the 95th Oregon FFA State Convention in Redmond Oregon. 18 students got to see Smith Rock for the very first time with the beautiful weather in Central Oregon and learn some tree ID and environmental science. Chehayla Hyatt was nominated for the Blue Jacket Experience sponsored by Ag West Farm Credit Services (the Blue Jacket Experience allows all 116 Oregon FFA Chapters to nominate a student to receive their own FFA Jacket), and Chehayla was also selected as an Adopted Member by the Salem Branch of Ag West Farm Credit. She was able to attend a luncheon and network with employees from Ag West and has been invited for a tour of their new Lending Branch in Salem. Isaac Santiago-Martinez's SAE project at Willamette Tree Service, and his SAE’s showing market goats at County Fair, he qualified and earned his Oregon FFA State Degree, this is the highest accomplishment at student can earn in the State of Oregon. Students must meet strict requirements to be eligible to receive this honor. He is the 3rd member to earn this achievement since the Salem-Keizer chapter re-charted. Our first-year members took part in the Oregon FFA Information Test, a 100-question test examining their knowledge of the FFA Organization since its founding in 1928. All our members developed their leadership skills in various workshops hosted by organizations, universities or visiting State FFA officers.

  • Scots-Appella has been competing in the ICHSA competition this year, in January they won 1st place at the West Quarterfinals and received awards for best choreography and best vocal percussion. They recently were awarded 2nd place at the West Semifinal in El Segundo California. They will be advancing to the finals in New York on April 28th.
