K-6 Curriculum Notes
August 2017
Mastery Learning
Everday Math
Our goal, in our 90 minute math blocks, is to dedicate 75 minutes to Tier 1 (Everyday Math, fact fluency, etc) and 15 minutes to standards-mastery practice. I have spoken to a couple of the buildings already about one possibility - The Daily Math Review. I know this had been a practice at Concord in some places a few years ago. When coupled with effective EM4 implementation this is a very powerful driver of student achievement and fits well with our mastery learning vision within the Strategic Plan.

Grant Opportunities
Close Reading
Additionally, we will be asking all teachers K-12 to use the same annotation symbols when teaching close reading. Those can be found here. Each teacher K-6 will receive a copy of the Minuteman Marks for Close Reading poster shortly.
Argumentative Writing
NWEA
NWEA is nationally known to be a very reliable assessment tool and I am very excited for how it can inform our day to day instruction as well as bigger picture practices.
The first testing window begins August 28th! In most grades there are three assessments given - reading, writing, and math. Each assessment takes between 45 and 90 minutes.
New Running Record Kits - Fountas & Pinnell
There will be an optional training Wednesday, 8/23 from 4:00 - 5:00, at the EC if you'd like to come and see how the kits are used.
Please note that the grading policy sheet indicates that a reading benchmark should be administered BOY, Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4. The BOY window is 8/16/17 - 9/01/17.
