Principal Advisory Council Vacancies

We have vacancies that can be filled by parents that are interested in serving on our Principal Advisory Council. Parent Candidate Declaration forms can be found by clicking here. Candidate declarations are due by Friday, September 3. The purpose of the Principal Advisory Council is to bring parents, school employees, students and community members together to create a better understanding of and mutual respect for each other's perspectives and share ideas for increasing student achievement and performance. We are looking forward to building on this partnership this school year!

Chromebook Updates

Stone Mountain High School will continue distributing Chromebooks this week to students. To receive a Chromebook, students must have no outstanding technology fees and have completed the Device User Agreement. For all students with a virtual schedule, we will distribute Chromebooks from 9:00 AM--2:00 PM and 4:00 PM-6:00 PM on Monday August 30 outside of door 6 to the left of the building. If these times are not convenient, please email Assistant Principal Bowers at samone_bowers@dekalbschoolsga.org to schedule another time for pickup. We will distribute the remaining Chromebooks to students who did not receive one during the initial distribution.

Backpack/Bookbag rule to be enforced starting August 31.

Monday, August 30, will be the last day we allow students in the building with backpacks/bookbags. Per the DeKalb County Student Code of Conduct, backpacks/bookbags are not permitted unless they are mesh or clear. Since we are using Chromebooks, most student textbooks and assignments will be completed using the computers so a backpack is not needed. Backpacks/Bookbags will be confiscated at the door upon entry that do not meet the requirements. For questions, email Assistant Principal Okpah at michael_okpah@dekalbschoolsga.org.

Voter Registration Drive August 30-September 3

We will have a voter registration drive during all lunch sessions next week. If students are 18 or will turn 18 before November 5, you can register to vote. Please encourage your students to fulfill their civic duty by registering and voting in the next election.

Juniors can also take the exam for free if they qualify for free and reduced lunch and have completed a free lunch application this year. You can complete a lunch application here. Please encourage them to register this week so we can order their PSAT exam soon.

Managing COVID-19 at Stone Mountain High School

To build better transparency, please see the Readiness Response Guide for our district which presents the latest strategies in managing our response to the global pandemic. Let us also look at some things we can do specifically at SMHS, to increase safety and maintain a healthy environment.

  • Please do NOT send students to school that are sick. Even if you think it is just a cold, it may be something else. We all have to be careful to avoid spreading COVID and it is often disguised as mild, cold-like symptoms. If you student is sick, the absence can be excused by calling our attendance desk at 678-676-6319.
  • Teachers have created seating charts to assist with contact tracing. Seating charts are an effective way to isolate potential close contacts. The close contact guidance has changed for students. As long as students are within 3-6 feet and the students correctly and consistently wear their masks, the student will not be listed as a close contact. If you have had a student sent home as a close contact, and have questions about when they can return, please contact the school at 678-676-6303.
  • We have created five lunch sessions to assist with social distancing. We will also create a staggered dismissal schedule for all areas to release your students. This will assist with the predictability of dismissal and for additional social distancing as students exit the building.
  • Proper mask wearing. Everyone needs to wear a mask indoors. If students are eating, we encourage them to place their mask back on as soon as possible.
  • Each classroom has sanitation supplies to assist with disinfecting desks and tables after student use.
  • We will check that the contact tracing QR codes are active for each room. If you as a teacher enter a space, scan the code when you enter and exit. This will allow more effective tracing for staff.
  • Students must wear their masks on the bus or they will be subject to disciplinary consequences.

Unfortunately, this is our current reality, however, if we manage it effectively, we can mitigate the impact on us and our students. We can do it! If you have questions or concerns, please contact the school and we can discuss. Together, as a team, we will make this a successful and safe school year.
