The Weekly Update #8
From the Desk of Ms. Hicks
Now that we are well into the school year, we have noticed two areas of improvement regarding behavior. Over the next few weeks, we are going to focus on students arriving to class on time and ensuring that all student actions are ones that are safe. Students participated in an Advisory lesson about “unsafe actions” and learned what actions are not acceptable in school. In the 2022-2023 Student Handbook, unsafe actions are defined as “any action that has the potential to cause danger or physical harm to self or others.”
Specific examples include:
· Horseplay
· Tripping
· TikTok challenges
· Joking
· poking a person
· behavior that incites or causes a school or class disruption
· unauthorized opening entrances and exits
· moving another person’s belongings without authorization
· etc.
Please help us by reminding your students to focus on learning when they are here at Wiley H. Bates Middle School. All students deserve a safe, comfortable learning environment and we are doing our best to ensure this happens.

This week is National School Lunch Week!
National School Lunch Week
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) serves nearly 30 million children every school day. President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week (NSLW) in 1962 to promote the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has inside and outside of the classroom. #NSLW22 will be celebrated October 10-14, 2022.

Is your student not feeling well?
Please remind your students there is a no cell phone policy at Bates Middle. If your child is not feeling well, please tell them they can ask for a pass from their teacher to the health room. They will then be evaluated by our school nurses and parents will be contacted, if necessary. Currently, students are texting parents to let them know they are not feeling well and then leaving school without being evaluated first. Please follow these steps:
- If a student is not feeling well, encourage them to ask for a pass from their teacher to see the nurse.
- The nurse will evaluate the student and decide if they can return back to class or if the guardian needs to be contacted.
- If the student would like to speak with family members, the nurse will allow them to use the phone in their office.
- Students should not be texting family members during the school day. Remember, cell phones must be off and away all day.
Need more uniforms? Need a sweatshirt to beat the cold?
Uniform polos and sweatshirts are sold year round for our students. Polo shirts are $9, sweatshirts are $12. We will sell them each day between 9:00am-9:15am. Please provide your student with either cash or check and have them report to the gym lobby to see Mr. Lambert to take care of any uniform needs.
All sizes are now available.

Lunch Delivery Policy
Bates Middle School will not accept deliveries from any restaurant or third-party vendor like DoorDash, GrubHub, Uber Eats, etc. Students and parents may not arrange for those services to provide food to students during the school day. In addition, please do not send kids to school with McDonalds, Wendy's, Chick-Fil-A, or other outside fast food. This can become a distraction for others. If a parent is unable to drop off a lunch from home for their student, we will provide them with a meal from the cafeteria. Additionally, parents bringing bulk food drop-offs (lunch for your student and some of their friends) will not be accepted. Please limit any lunch drop-offs to your student only in the rare instance of forgetfulness.
