Spotlight: AVID 8

The second quarter theme for AVID 8 was Season of Service. With the help of guest speakers and a trip to the Idaho Food Bank to volunteer our time, we learned about non profits in our community. Students all picked a non profit they felt strongly about and wrote persuasive letters urging readers to donate time and talent to these causes. The classes voted to donate to the American Heritage Wildlife Foundation and to the Make a Wish Foundation after learning about these foundations from letters written by Davis Christianson, Kaden Neider and Dimitri Hanian.

AVID students continued to work on academic excellence. Two of our students, Jose Duran and Sanaa Abdukarim, were honored as Riverglen Students of the Month. These two students along with Jake Wills, Peyton Govia, Diana Ayala, Denise Martinez, Kassidy Page, Madilyn Waynetska, Braden Johnson, and Davis Christianson also were recognized as AVID honor roll students for achieving a G.P.A. of 3.5 or better.

Another big improvement came with the student's focused note taking. Every week the students shared their notes with our wonderful parent volunteer, Paula Johnson, who evaluated and helped students to improve their note taking skills over the quarter.

We look forward to the new semester. We will be welcoming a few new students to our AVID 8 classes. Our focus will shift to making a 4 year academic plan, improving our questioning skills in tutorial, learning more about college and going on the district wide AVID ski trip to Bogus Basin!

Spotlight: AVID 9

The AVID 9th grade classes have been focusing on preparing for high school and finishing their time at Riverglen strongly. Recently we went to Capital High School for a morning of touring the school, meeting their peers/future classmates, and sitting in on some accelerated/AP classes. It was a great opportunity to help our 9th graders begin to transition and hit the ground running at Capital. That same afternoon the freshman participated in games and activities with all the AVID students here at Riverglen.

What is AVID, anyway?

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a proven college readiness system, established over 30 years ago, that uses research-based strategies and curriculum to help close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID is a school-wide approach to curriculum and rigor that impacts more than 800,000 students in K-12 and 41 post-secondary institutions. The Boise School District first implemented AVID at Fairmont Junior High in 2006. Since then, the AVID system has been implemented in every junior high and high school in the Boise School District. In addition, elementary students are being exposed to AVID strategies such as focused note-taking, binder organization and WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) strategies.
