The Mata Memo
October 20, 2020
Principal's Message
Dear Mata families,
The first six weeks of school this year has been completed! So far this year, we are navigating uncharted territory and we all are rethinking how we deliver instruction virtually and face to face. We are proud to say to you all that we are excited that we are normalizing our environments. Our teachers and staff are consistently problem-solving in order to make sure your children's needs are met. We know that it is not easy to stay strong during this time and we can't say enough how much we appreciate you and your support of our school.
We would like to remind you to please have your students log into classes each day, participate in learning, and turn in their assignments. We are taking attendance daily for remote learners.

Kids Teaching Kids 21 Day Challenge!
Elementary School Students are invited to take the “Virtual 21-Day Challenge” November 2-22, 2020
The kids teaching kids® program offers children and their parents the knowledge and resources to change their eating habits for the better. In the last 30 years, childhood obesity has more than tripled. Studies reveal that kids are snacking more frequently and research suggests that eating fruits and vegetables may help maintain a healthy body weight.
This is an after-school snacking challenge designed to help students create new, healthier snacking habits.
Online Registration October 19 - November 7, 2020

Dyslexia Awareness Month
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month! Over the course of this month, we will share information about dyslexia with students and staff at Mata. We will have a Dyslexia Awareness Day on Thursday, October 22, 2020. Students may wear a gray shirt and/or a gray ribbon in honor of dyslexia awareness. On this day, we will also host a Mata Parent meeting at 5pm via Zoom. Click here to join
Meeting ID: 847 8130 5425

The district is holding virtual Q & A sessions via Zoom for all Dallas ISD parents. The Q & A sessions will be specifically catered to you. Please see the attached flyers for more information.
8th Grade PSAT
Eduardo Mata Montessori will administer the PSAT 8/9 on October 21, 2020 to students in the 8th grade. This test is only offered on-campus in-person with no virtual option. All students will be expected to follow safety and social distancing procedures when scheduled to test on campus. These safety procedures include students wearing face coverings before, during and after testing. Students doing digital learning at home are required to come on campus and test. However, the test is optional.
The PSAT 8/9 tests the same skills and knowledge as the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, and PSAT 10—in a way that makes sense for eighth graders. It measures what they’re already learning, shows them whether they’re on track for college, and lets them know where they need the most improvement. That means students have time to tackle these areas long before they take the SAT. The following are other key benefits of the PSAT 8/9.
· It helps establish a baseline for students as they enter high school and begin preparing for college and career readiness.
· It will identify areas where students excel and may want to consider taking higher-level courses, as well as areas they should focus on to improve academically.
Please note that PSAT 8/9 scores are not sent to colleges.
Dress Pass Friday Information
IT'S DRESS PASS TIME!!
This month’s Dress pass day is Friday, October 23rd.
It will be a little different this year. Instead of having tables at drop-off, where we would collect money and place wristbands on students, we are asking Mata families to sponsor a classroom. We hope this will keep things safer for everyone and help to make sure that NO student is left out.
New Mata families, this is a tradition and a major fundraiser for our school! Dress pass day is once a month and allows your student to wear something other than their school uniform or spirit gear.
Dress Pass Rules: No open toe shoes, flip-flops or heels, all shirts, dresses, and shorts must be at least fingertip length, No spaghetti straps, spandex, or PJ's. Jeans may not have rips or holes. We want everyone to be included regardless of in-person or virtual. Students can see each other on-screen, upload a picture of their favorite outfit or the teacher may decide to set up a few minutes for a zoom fashion show. Each teacher will find ways to share with both in-person and virtual students.
Find your teacher's name and sign up (RSVP) as the sponsor. Then click the link below and select large or small (this is written next to your teacher's name on the sign up genius)
https://checkout.square.site/buy/KBBUPKBMQJ6PFCZDHWIT3PT4
If you see an RSVP name already by your teacher, that means someone has already sponsored the class (Hurray!!!)
The amounts are based on in-person students. $15 is for classes with 9 students or less & $25 is for classes with 10 or more
https://checkout.square.site/buy/KBBUPKBMQJ6PFCZDHWIT3PT4
Storybook Character Parade Day
Virtual learners, if you would like to participate, please submit a picture via the link HERE for the slide show!
We can't wait for this traditional event! Mark your calendars!
Uniform Assistance Program
The Dallas ISD Uniform Assistance Program (UAP) offers one free uniform (one top, one bottom) to eligible students in grades PK-8th each school year. The program issues uniforms to qualified students in the official district colors, which are white for the top and khaki, black and navy for the bottoms. In addition to these colors, the Uniform Assistance Program also provides navy tops. Bottoms available include pants, skirts, skorts, and shorts.
Please reach out to Ms. Gunter at sgunter@dallasisd.org for information.
UPCOMING STUDENT SEL SURVEY - Oct 27th!
WE THANK YOU AND YOUR FAMILY FOR BEING OUR VALUED PARTNERS AS WE WORK TOGETHER TO EDUCATE THE CHILDREN IN OUR SCHOOL THIS YEAR. WE VALUE INPUT FROM OUR COMMUNITY AND WE NEED TO HEAR FROM YOUR CHILD(REN)! THEY ARE IMPORTANT PARTNERS AS WE WORK TO IMPROVE THEIR OVERALL EXPERIENCE AND SUPPORT THEIR NEEDS. The survey will be administered to 3rd-8th grade students on October 27th.
IN ORDER TO LEARN MORE ABOUT STUDENT EXPERIENCES, WE WILL BE ASKING FOR YOUR CHILD’S FEEDBACK VIA AN ONLINE SURVEY. THE SURVEY SHOULDN’T TAKE MORE THAN 10-15 MINUTES TO COMPLETE.
WE ARE ASKING THAT ALL OF OUR STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THE SURVEYS, AS THEIR FEEDBACK WILL PROVIDE INVALUABLE INSIGHTS INTO THEIR EXPERIENCES AND HOW TO IMPROVE AND ADAPT OUR SCHOOL TO THEIR NEEDS. IF A STUDENT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE ENOUGH INFORMATION TO ANSWER A QUESTION, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO SKIP THE ITEM ALTOGETHER.
THE SURVEY CONTENT WILL ASK STUDENTS TO SELF REFLECT ON THEIR OWN SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING SKILLS, LIKE SELF-MANAGEMENT AND SELF-EFFICACY.
WE THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR SUPPORT. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SURVEY ADMINISTRATION, PLEASE DON’T HESITATE TO CONTACT US AT Matamontessori@dallasisd.org or jlopez@dallasisd.org
LE AGRADECEMOS A USTED Y A SU FAMILIA POR SER NUESTROS VALIOSOS SOCIOS MIENTRAS TRABAJAMOS JUNTOS PARA EDUCAR A LOS NIÑOS DE NUESTRA ESCUELA ESTE AÑO. ¡VALORAMOS LA OPINIÓN DE NUESTRA COMUNIDAD Y NECESITAMOS ESCUCHAR A SU HIJO (A)! SON SOCIOS IMPORTANTES MIENTRAS TRABAJAMOS PARA MEJORAR SU EXPERIENCIA GENERAL Y APOYAR SUS NECESIDADES.
PARA APRENDER MÁS ACERCA DE LAS EXPERIENCIAS DE LOS ESTUDIANTES, ESTAREMOS PIDIENDO LA OPINIÓN DE SU HIJO(A) A TRAVÉS DE UNA ENCUESTA EN LÍNEA. LA ENCUESTA NO DEBERÍA TARDAR MÁS DE 10-15 MINUTOS EN COMPLETAR.
ESTAMOS PIDIENDO QUE TODOS NUESTROS ESTUDIANTES PARTICIPEN EN LAS ENCUESTAS, YA QUE SUS COMENTARIOS PROPORCIONARÁN UNA VISIÓN INVALUABLE SOBRE SUS EXPERIENCIAS Y CÓMO MEJORAR Y ADAPTAR NUESTRA ESCUELA A SUS NECESIDADES. SI UN ESTUDIANTE NO SIENTE QUE TIENE SUFICIENTE INFORMACIÓN PARA RESPONDER UNA PREGUNTA, PODRÁ OMITIR TODO EL TEMA.
EL CONTENIDO DE LA ENCUESTA SOLICITARÁ A LOS ESTUDIANTES QUE SE REFLEXIONEN SOBRE SUS PROPIAS HABILIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE SOCIAL EMOCIONAL, COMO LA AUTOGESTIÓN Y LA AUTOEFICACIA.
LE DAMOS LAS GRACIAS DE ANTEMANO POR SU APOYO. SI TIENE ALGUNA PREGUNTA ACERCA DE LA ADMINISTRACIÓN DE LA ENCUESTA, NO DUDE EN CONTACTARNOS EN matamontessori@dallasisd.org or jlopez@dallasisd.org

Books to Go!
Books-To-Go
We are happy to announce our new service to students: " Books-To-Go.". Books-To-Go is an opportunity for students and parents to request print books through the student's school library in an effort to support equitable access for all learner environments. Due to Covid-19, librarians want to be sure that students have access to print materials to enhance their academic learning, whether they are learning virtually or face-to-face. Dr. Douglas Fisher in his webinar stated that print is best for students who are focusing on dense or complex texts.
Students and parents of students may place requests or "holds" through the library online catalog, library.dallasisd.org
Steps include:
• Select the student's home campus in the online catalog on the sidebar. Place a "hold" on the item(s) needed.
• Use the tawk.to app on the school's library webpage or other library contact information on the school's library webpage to make arrangements with the librarian about pick-up date and time.
• Our book pick up time is Fridays from 1:30-3:30 PM. Please email Ms. Thompson at Shanthompson@dallasisd.org for questions.
