If you'd like for your child to also buy a sack lunch from the cafeteria, please email us by Tuesday, December 19, since these are prepared ahead of time.
Students ordering a lunch will pick it up after the Sing-A-Long. Students attending Kidz U may take it with them to Kidz U when school is dismissed at 11:45.
~~~~~~~~~~~Have a wonderful winter break!~~~~~~~~~~~~
We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers who help make second grade such a delightful experience for our students and for us. Whether you work preparing materials for the classroom, work on school wide events or clubs, generously donate supplies, or show your support by reading with your child, we deeply appreciate each and every one of you. We hope you enjoy some down time during the holiday break.
Reading Tip
Use the long stretches of unscheduled time over the holiday break to encourage your child to get lost in a favorite book, especially ones in a recently opened package! What a great time to snuggle up and enjoy a good book together as well. With the many reading apps on your child's iPad, listening to a good book is another way to encourage extra reading time.
All of these options will help your child get a head start on the Six Flags 6 Hour Reading Club and, more importantly, build a love of reading!
Ways to Help Your Child Succeed in Math
*Keep working on addition and subtraction facts. One of the best ways to do this is by using the Reflex app. Other ideas: computer games or websites, cards, games that use dice (like Yahtzee or Monopoly) or that require addition to total scores (such as Scrabble).
*Make a game of counting by 5s and 10s, starting with a two- or three- digit number. (ex: 465, 470, 475, 480, etc.). Also practice counting by 10s starting with a two-digit number that doesn’t end in a 5 or 0 (ex: counting forward: 37, 47, 57, etc. and counting backward: 86, 76, 66, 56, etc.). After this comes easily, continue counting by 10s or 100s to 1000.
*We've been working on telling time to 5 minutes. Each time you pass an analog clock, ask your child what the time is and if it's A.M. or P.M.
*When we return from the break, we will start working with money. Have your child use their counting by 5s skills to count nickels or to start with 25¢ and count by 5s up to 50¢. Then do the same with dimes.
Thanks for help in keeping your child's Math skills sharp!
