Need to Know: "Leaders Obey"
This Sunday kids are learning the story of David & Goliath from 1 Samuel 17. It's something that many of us are familiar with but take a second to read it again before serving this Sunday.
Before we teach on obedience, we first have to talk about hearing from the Lord. You can't obey if you can't hear. You know what God's voice sounds like because you spend time in the Word. (2 Timothy 3: 16-17).
Some common ways the Lord speaks are:
- Scripture- this is the primary way that God speaks to us
- Prophetic Words- delivered by others who speak to us, think about this like the Holy Spirit encouragement
- God is creative in the way that he speaks through so many other things like nature, circumstances, etc.
Obedience doesn't come from doing what we think is right. We just have to receive what the Lord is telling us and respond. Obeying the words that the Lord speaks to you brings confidence in what He can do, not what you can do in your flesh. As you obey, you get to rest in the Lord's strength (the story of David shows this here)
Sometimes obedience might seem like a big step, but look back at times the Lord has already rescued you- His past faithfulness is a predictor for His future faithfulness as you walk in obedience. (the story of David shows this here)
Things to Think About:
- When was the last time you feel like you've heard from the Lord? What has he been saying to you?
- Are there any steps of obedience that the Lord is asking you to take right now?
