CAS FIRST GRADERS VISIT MHS

On Tuesday, June 7 we hosted Central Avenue Elementary School's first grade students for their spring science unit capstone experience. Mrs. Monkemeier, Mrs. DeTrolio, and Ms. McCarthy developed the activities which included courtyard observations, examining structure using the microscope, a turtle meet and greet, and a game of Kahoot! for assessment facilitated by Mr. Braine and Mr. Lerner.

Mr. Coviello's TV production students put together this short video (below) about the experience (amazingly quick turnaround!)

The first graders were partnered with high school students who guided them through the activities - it was a great time for everyone!

Thank you to everyone who made this experience possible - this is another example of the things that make our department great!

STEM TO THE RESCUE!

Mr. Erdreich's STEM students have been putting their knowledge to practical uses with two recent projects!

Mr. Erdreich recently helped one of his students make an adapter so that the student could use his grandfather's watch band with an Apple Watch face. They printed it on our MJS 3D printer and the result was the marriage of antique and high tech!

STEM students also designed a keyboard guard for a kindergarten student with special needs. The student relies on the touchscreen and the guard helps prevent errant keystrokes. The students came up with the design and Mr. Erdreich used his laser cutter to fabricate it out of wood. Great job!

REFLECTING ON FRIDAY'S PD

At the May 27th professional development meeting Jim Bonanno from Strategic Environmental Consulting gave us a lot of good information about classroom safety, chemical handing, and storage. As the school year comes to a close please remember to go through your inventories and secure them. Identify materials for disposal and separate them from the general stocks.

Please go to this Google form and fill it out for any item that needs to be properly disposed of: http://goo.gl/forms/62uFctTdaFVWMiL22
