Thinking about college? Follow these steps:

  1. Talk to your counselor about the year ahead. Confirm that your classes will put you on the right track for college admission.
  2. Prepare for and take the PSAT in October. You may qualify for National Merit Scholarships.
  3. Start developing a resume: a record of your accomplishments, activities, and work experience.
  4. If you haven't participated in many activities outside of class, now is the time to sign up. Consider clubs at school, team sports, leadership roles, involvement in a religious or civic community group.
  5. Explore colleges that interest you and check entrance requirements.
  6. Research scholarships, grants, loans at CFNC.org.
  7. Begin to prepare for the ACT or SAT. Plan to take at least one of these tests in the spring. Ask your counselor if you qualify for a fee waiver.

Are you a Girl Scout?

The Girl Scouts have introduced their first badge dedicated to college exploration. The College Knowledge Badge — launched in July —is for scouts in grades 11 and 12.

To earn the College Knowledge Badge, girls must show that they’ve explored their postsecondary options, started the admission process, made a financial plan, learned success skills, and started to build healthy habits.

Learn more about the new badge.
