What we are learning
Sight Words and Words Their Way.
This week we will start back with all word study and spelling activities. On Friday, we will have a sight word test on the following words- are, now, if, went, came. Please work with your child to learn them. Children should be able to read these words with fluency and automatically without thinking about them.
For our spelling groups, your child might express going to a different teacher's room. In December students were re-assessed on the spelling inventory. To give each student what they need to make them successful in spelling, students will be placed in new group based on how they scored on the inventory. On Monday, your child will bring home a sheet with directions, a sheet with a group of pictures, words or a combination of both and a mat. Please cut the pictures/ words apart and have your child practice sorting them by the rule they are sorting. Student should practice the sort Monday through Thursday. On Thursday night they will need to glue their sort down to the mat.
Reading/Social Studies
Please continue to read at home for at least 20 minutes each night. We would appreciate it if you would have your child log the books they read during the week. We will be finishing our study on Fairy Tales with the students publishing their own fairy tale. We will be working on making more complex sentences with proper nouns, verbs, and adjectives. For Social studies we will be working on geography, children will be able to discuss different landforms. This unit is aligned with our science goals.
Math - We are starting a new unit. We will be working with building numbers with place value blocks. We will be able to show numbers as groups of tens and ones. For example, the number 53 can be modeled as 5 groups of ten and 3 ones. We will be using skip counting by 1's, 5's and 10's. We will be comparing numbers that have the same digits, for example 25 and 52-we will be able to explain why these numbers are different. We will be continuing with IPS questions-during this 9 weeks student will be given an equation and they will have to write a story problem to match the equation and solve for the questions. This will change the format for our math homework on Wednesdays.
Science - We will be learning about earth science. Our focus this next week will be WATER. We will be discussing where we find fresh water and salt water. If you get a chance to visit any local museums, spend some time in the geology area.
End of 2nd Nine Weeks and Report Card
Should you have questions about your child's progress, please contact your child's teacher to set up a conference. We are available to discuss your child's progress sometimes before school starts, during our planning time, and sometimes after school. It is important to make an appoint for a meeting. Report cards will be coming out the following week.
Hot and Cold!
Bad Weather-Snow and Ice
As we move into winter, it is important to know the school districts winter weather procedures. In the event of winter weather, the administration will consider the safety of our 53,000+ students and more than 6,000 employees in our 127-square mile district when making decisions about school closures.
LISD administrators will determine school cancellations or delays based on the safety of all students and staff district-wide.
If school is cancelled or delayed due to a weather-related event, parents and staff members will be notified via multiple platforms, including LISD’s parent callout system (Skylert), websites – including all campus websites – Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. For the most instantaneous notification, visit our website and/or follow us on Twitter.
Please know that LISD is working diligently to keep you informed as quickly as possible, but know that some forms of notification may be slightly delayed due to the demands of mass messaging.
As always, LISD will keep parents, students and community members informed with the most up-to-date information through these communication platforms. LISD thanks you in advance for your patience in the event of a winter weather situation.
Cold and Flu Season is HERE!
Your child’s health is of great importance. It is that time of year when colds, flu and viruses run wild in schools, churches, and other public places. We will take every precaution to have a healthy and safe environment. Please consider getting a flu shot for yourself and your child. Having the flu is not any fun and can be life threatening for young children.
We would like you to consider keeping your child home if they have fever, diarrhea and vomiting. It is requested that students be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. Please don't give your child a fever reducer and send them to school. Our bodies create a fever to fight viruses and to give us a warning that we are sick. When you send a child to school sick you will be impacting 20 plus families in addition to the teachers and their families. Teachers don't like missing days of school due to illness.
If your child becomes ill while at school, we will take them to the school nurse. The nurse will evaluate your child and will contact you to let you know if you need to pick your child up. Please keep in mind the only person on campus that can give any medication is our school nurse
