A Peek Inside the Week - March 24th, 2023
A Note from Your Principals
We are thrilled to share that after 1.5 years of building our adult social-emotional skills and understanding of the RULER pedagogy, in the 2023-24 school year (next year!), we'll begin implementing with our students!
The RULER social-emotional program is an evidence-based approach and curriculum to help children develop emotional intelligence skills. It teaches children how to recognize and regulate their emotions, understand the emotions of others, and communicate effectively.
What is RULER?
RULER is a social-emotional learning program developed by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. It stands for Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotions. The program is designed to teach children the skills they need to recognize and manage their emotions effectively.
Why is emotional intelligence important?
Emotional intelligence is a critical skill for success in life. It helps children develop healthy relationships with others, make good decisions, and cope with stress and adversity. Research has shown that children who have strong emotional intelligence skills are more likely to be successful in school and in their personal lives.
What does the RULER program involve?
The RULER program includes a variety of activities and lessons designed to teach children the five key emotional intelligence skills. These activities may include games, role-playing exercises, and discussions about real-life situations. The program is typically implemented in the classroom, but parents can also reinforce the lessons at home.
How can parents support their children's emotional development? Parents can support their children's emotional development by modeling healthy emotional behavior, talking to their children about their emotions, and encouraging their children to express themselves in healthy ways. They can also reinforce the lessons their children are learning in the RULER program by discussing emotions and problem-solving with their children at home.
Overall, the RULER program is a valuable tool for helping children develop emotional intelligence skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. By working together we can help children learn to recognize and regulate their emotions, communicate effectively, and build healthy relationships with others.
More opportunities to learn about RULER will be coming later this spring and next fall!
