Reading Post
March 2015
Notes:
To begin with, we apologize for our late submission of this months newsletter. We want to thank you for your continued support to Martin's students and for seeking the Reading department when you need assistance. We enjoy working with each of you.
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Read Across America activities throughout the week. The students seemed to enjoy the story telling and dressing up daily.
Mrs. Barnes found a quote and wanted to share it with everyone:
"We've been talking about how authors don't always come right out and tell us everything we need to know right up front, even basic things like who's talking to whom and where the characters are. Instead they slip information in, planting clues they expect us to catch, just like we expect them to reveal more over time and make certain things clearer as we read."(What Readers Really Do by Barnhouse & Vinton, p. 85)
She has asked that you share this quote with your class and have them reflection on a fictional text they have read.

Ways to have “fun” with writing
*read wordless picture book and have students create the story
*From wordless picture book or picture have students write a simple sentence and then revise to make a complex sentence.
*Invitation to notice and invitation to edit DAILY!!!! by using mentor sentences
EXAMPLE: Invitation to Edit
It scared me a lot, but I kept walking with Grandma. (Patricia Polacco, Thunder Cake)
It scared me a lot, but I keeps walking with Grandma.
It scared me alot, but I kept walking with Grandma.
It scared me a lot, but i kept walking with Grandma.
It scared me a lot, I kept walking with Grandma.
It scared me a lot, but I kept walking with Grandma?
Show one sentence at a time and have students find the error and what/how to edit the sentence.
*Build sentences using legos. Use visa V to write and wipe off
