General Conference Update

As a United Methodist, you are probably aware that our General Conference will meeting in Portland, Oregon next week May 10th-20th. This once-every-four-years official meeting of the church determines what holds us together as a denomination. Our church is a connectional church. We are linked together with about 43,000 other congregations throughout the world. What holds us together is a shared understanding of Christian doctrine and church by-laws. The 1000 delegates to General Conference continue or revise policy as needed through a long democratic process at this important conference.

You can follow along at this link for what's going on. I believe there will be a link for live streaming as well. Watching General Conference worship and legislative debate can be inspiring and entertaining. Here's a summary of legislative issues. I encourage you to get to know what's going on firsthand rather than letting the news media tell you what we are voting about.

Remember that we a global church with about 1/3 of the delegates to General Conference coming from outside the US. We here in Conyers don't think about it much, but the world worships in God's love through the UMC. Pray that we find common ground and continue our faithful witness to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Baby Bottle Fundraiser

It is time for our annual Baby Bottle Campaign to help Refuge Pregnancy Center, located here in Conyers. A representative will speak briefly to us next Sunday about the program. Most of you have participated for a number of years and have helped greatly. This organization helps women who become pregnant and fear that they cannot keep their baby and provide for it. They prevent many abortions from taking place, thus saving many lives, by guiding the women to financial help, as well as more practical help in coping with their situation. They appreciate all the help we have given them in the past, and I hope we can do even more this year. They are truly a worthwhile organization. Fundraising ends on Father's Day--June 19th.
