Open Forum

At every School Board meeting, the public is invited to speak at open forum. The Board asks that each speaker who has signed up to address the School Board state their name and address for the record. Speakers are asked to refrain from using this forum to criticize or complain about a specific employee by name. The School Board takes into consideration comments made by the public at Open Forum but is not obligated to respond to or debate issues in this forum. Open Forum does NOT provide a two-way dialogue or interactive discussion with the School Board. Questions, concerns and requests may be directed to the appropriate administrator for review or response. Speakers who desire a written response to a specific question, may request it.

When Board meetings moved online due to COVID-19, the District created an online form for comments to be read during the meetings. This week, the form failed to send notifications to the District. As a result, only two comments of more than 40 submitted were read publicly. The District apologizes for this technical error and is working to ensure the form is repaired in the future.

It is important to note that “Agenda Item 4.2: Readiness for school opening - Report” was a presentation only. No action was taken, and the public comments that were not read did not impact any decisions. The Board appreciates hearing public comments at open forum and will read each of the following comments that were submitted. The following link shares all of the comments submitted by the deadline for the August 18 meeting.

Regular meeting of the School Board, August 18, 2020

Enrollment update

Superintendent Chris Lennox presented an enrollment update for the 2020-2021 school year. Current enrollment projections indicate 11,546 students are expected to attend Mounds View Public Schools this fall. This would represent 36 more students than last fall. All enrollment data will be monitored through the start of the school year. For a chart of currently projected enrollments by school and grade, click here.

Readiness for school

Superintendent Lennox and members of the executive team reported on aspects of school operations in preparation for the 2020-2021 school year, including the MN Safe Learning Plan & expectations, health, safety and operations, instructional models, student & staff support and communication and resources. No action was taken, as this agenda item was a report only. All support areas are ready to welcome students on September 8.

District Operational Plan adopted

Each year, the School Board approves a series of goals and related activities on which the Superintendent and Cabinet will focus their work. This is known as the District Operational Plan (DOP). It is directly related to the District's vision and to the School Board's strategic directions for the year. The DOP has been developed by the Superintendent and his Cabinet and has been previously discussed with the Board at work sessions and Board meetings. To view the entire DOP, please visit here.

Summer student celebrations

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, programs and activities continued over the summer with a different look. Assistant Superintendent Jeff Ridlehoover gave an update regarding summer school programs. Director of Community Education Karl Brown detailed how community education programs went virtual, and some camps were able to be held in person.

Updates

The Board discussed issues and updates related to AMSD.
