A Message from the Leadership Team
There are just over twenty instructional nights left, for our evening sites and slightly more for our day programs, before the end of Winter Term. As the end of the term nears, Site Coordinators will begin to plan and schedule student testing. Nearly all students will be eligible to test, so it is important that we plan accordingly. In order to help students build confidence and alleviate any test anxiety they may be feeling, we ask that teachers begin talking about the test with students. Let them know that they will be testing in a few weeks and that the test is an opportunity for them to “show-off”—demonstrate how much their skills have advanced. Remind them of the importance of coming to class every night or day. We know they work hard; now is their time to prove it! One cannot underestimate the power of positive reinforcement.
Over the next couple of weeks look for CASAS “test taking strategies” under “Teacher Resources” in this newsletter. These resources are designed to help students become familiar with the types of questions that are asked and to become comfortable with the tools and technology necessary to take the assessment. The strategies can be taught "whole-class" and are relevant to all levels. As always, thanks for all you do!
A special thanks to Kris Betten-Jutasi, Lindita Lici, Melissa Mierendorff, and their classes for their spirited and fun red ribbon week campaign. The students brightened the LWTC hallways (and days!) with colorful and meaningful drug-free messages (see the pictures at the top of the page). Also brightening the hallways was original art work from Melissa’s class: “Paint Your Heart Out”. Melissa had a local artist visit the class and help students learn how to express themselves through their art work. Finally, all three classes enjoyed a field trip to the local farmers' market where they had the opportunity to pick-up fresh, locally grown vegetables and produce for their favorite recipes. What a busy group!

COMMUNITY RESOURCES FROM BARBARA BELKOFF
Community organizations are a great place to find helpful resources, places that can help us with sometimes difficult situations. Community organizations depend on volunteers to help provide those resources. ONE of the very real ways to become part of a community is to become a volunteer within that community. You interact, speak and assist those living in your own backyard. Volunteering is a great way to practice our skills and also can be a great way to look for future employment.
So on a weekly basis I will share volunteer opportunities in Collier County.
ST. MATTHEWS HOUSE
St. Matthew’s House works to eliminate the elements of poverty at their base. Our homeless shelter and feeding ministry have opened their doors to countless lives without taking a day off in more than a quarter century.
Through our numerous programs, including the Justin’s Place Recovery Program, our ministry is able to initiate a second chance at life for many facing their toughest times. With established faith-based principles and dedication we’ve been able to see hundreds of individuals and families regain their independence.
