Newsletter Week 2 Term 4

Sacred Heart School Petone Wednesday 27th October, 2021

Malo ni Parents and friends

Welcome back to Term 4! This term is very short and of course we are still in Alert Level 2 so thank you for following our processes. We are hopeful that all our end of year activities will go ahead but that of course will depend on Alert Levels. We are organising back -up plans for these events.

Last week the Government outlined their Traffic Light system for the future which will eventually replace Alert Levels. We can all see how hard it is to eliminate the Delta variant so we encourage everyone to get vaccinated to keep your whanau safe. You will also be aware that from January 1st 2022 everyone who works in a school will have to be fully vaccinated. We are very pleased to let you know that our staff are well on the way to being 100% fully vaccinated. We have all been asked to do this to keep our tamariki safe as they as yet are unable to be vaccinated. We are still waiting for clarification about which volunteers will need to be fully vaccinated but we expect everyone who is involved with our students in any way will need to be fully vaccinated.

Our school athletics last week was a very successful event and we thank Katy and Jacqui for their organisation of the event. Special thanks to all the parents who helped out on the day. Unfortunately due to our current alert level both SWZ and Interzone Athletics have been cancelled.

We have appointed Clare Lewis to the permanent teaching position in Kea class for 2022. Clare is currently teaching at St Peter Chanel School in Dunedin. Clare will be coming up to visit us on December 3rd.

We offer our prayers and get well messages to Tala Ioane, one of our Year 7 students, who had an accident last week and broke his leg. Get well soon Tala.

Congratulations to Ema Taplin and family on the recent safe arrival of their new son and brother Archie. A new baby brother for Seth.

Our school band is competing in the Battle of the Bands today and we wish them all the best. We thank Penny Martell for all her work with the band this year.

Loud Shirt Day: Friday 29th October Gold coin donation. Wear your brightest outfit for this day and raise vital funds to help children and adults with profound hearing loss who access sound through cochlear implants. Loud Shirt Day is the national fundraising campaign for The Hearing House and the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme (SCIP) - the only two charities in New Zealand dedicated to helping children and adults with cochlear implants learn to listen and communicate.

School Production: Our school production will be held on Tuesday 7th December at the Little Theatre. This will of course be dependent on Alert Levels at the time. This term due to Production, lunch is from 12.30-1.30pm. Tickets will go on sale from November 8th and will be limited to 2 per family until the 22nd November. There will be ticket sales for the Dress Rehearsal / Matinee in the afternoon as well. There will be a Production newsletter next week.

Sports Term 4: Touch Rugby and Future Ferns Netball start this week. Both have very strict Health and Safety processes in place to allow these sports to happen. Please follow these processes and everyone will be able to enjoy their season. Some Touch information including the Draw for the season was sent home yesterday. An amended Draw was sent home today . All Touch fees are due by this Friday 29th October - $23.00 per player.

School Uniform: All students should be wearing summer uniform and have a school sunhat. Thanks to everyone who has ensured their children are in correct summer uniform.

Book Club closes Tuesday 2nd November. No late orders will be accepted. Next year all orders will need to be done online.

RISE Challenges: Completed RISE Challenges are due to me by Friday 26th November.

The Beatitudes:

During Caritas Social Justice week, Kakapo learnt about the Beatitudes. The theme was “A Culture of Encounter: Be the Church He Ahurea Tūtaki ki Ētahi atu: Me Noho Ko Koutou te Hāhi”

We studied ‘The Beatitudes’ in the Gospel of Matthew 5: 1-12 as a whole class and then unpacked each verse in groups. Questions each group researched.

  1. How does this verse challenge us to consider our attitudes and actions towards others?

  2. How is human dignity and solidarity present in your verse?

  3. How are we the ‘Church’ through this verse?

  4. Explain what this verse means to you in the world today.

  5. Summarise a statement.

  6. Create a poster with the Scripture verse, an image and a summary statement about your verse.

Thank you to Kate Wasson and the FOSH team for their hard work fundraising. It was a very fun night at the frock swap and they ran another successful school holiday programme.

At the last board meeting we had representatives from the MOE come and discuss implementing an enrolment scheme. The purpose of an enrolment scheme is to help us manage the school roll numbers. The MOE will consult with the Board and school community on the proposed scheme before it is implemented.

Essential Property Maintenance Package
