Principal's Weekly Update
Term 2, Week 3
RAISE Goal: to make an effort to check in daily with my class teacher.
Te reo phrase of the week: Taihoa (Wait)
Kia ora,
I hope you have had a good week and managed to enjoy the long weekend. We have now completed three weeks of our distance learning programme and I just want to say a massive thanks for the time and effort that you are putting in at home. I also just want to reiterate that we do not expect your child to complete every activity that their class teacher sets every day. If you are finding the activities too much to get through, please take a break. Similarly if you find yourself battling with your child to get activities completed, feel free to give them the day off. The main thing that we are concerned about is the well being of your child and whanau and it is important to find the right balance for your family.
Alert Level 3
On Monday night the government moved the country to alert level 3. For most people this will have meant that not much has changed. People are still recommended to work from home and students to learn from home. The government has stated to only send your child to school if adults in the house have to work and there is no one available to supervise your child. To help our school plan ahead, can I please ask you to email me at principal@matapu.school.nz at least 24 hours before you require to send your child to school. This gives us enough time to organise staffing for the day. The majority of our staff are working from home as per Ministry of Education guidelines. This approach will not change until we receive further information from the government, which will likely be on Monday 11th May.
Term 2 Teacher Only Days
We did have two teacher only days planned for the 2nd and 3rd June, which will no longer be happening. The purpose of these days was to provide our teachers with professional development and unfortunately due to Covid-19, this can no longer take place. Hopefully we will be able to reschedule the professional development towards the end of the year.

Writing
I tiptoed into the bathroom. If anyone caught me doing this, I’d be in big trouble. I grabbed my mother’s lipstick and brought it back to my bedroom where my brother slept. I crept towards my brother and smeared my mother’s favourite lipstick all over his face, He had been bugging me for days and now it was my time to get payback. Thank god he is a deep sleeper! I could do anything and he wouldn’t wake up. He moved a little in his sleep and smeared lipstick all over his pillow case. I knew then that I was going to be in deep trouble. Mum came in to check on him and saw the lipstick in my hand………I was in deep trouble.

Dear Miss B
Level 4 lock down what a long 5 weeks. I never thought it would end. I am glad that we have gone down a level. I am good. How are you doing and what have you been up to? During lockdown I have been going on my motorbike to explore an old sheep shearing shed on our farm. I've been going there with my sisters and we have found lots of old furniture. We have moved it to make a hut in the shed. I can't wait to get back to school and see everybody. Hopefully it is soon.
