LAW Literacy/ Math Week!
March 6-10
Hello LAW Families,
During the week of March 6-10 our goal is to make sure our students understand how reading is the key to success in life and how gratifying it is to enjoy a great book! We are planning daily events for students to engage in with a focus on reading and other aspects of literacy. It should be an exciting and fun-filled week!
This year, we are squeezing in a Math Information Night for Families on March 8th. We hope you are able to attend this fun and important night.

March Book Madness Month!
March Book Madness originated as an online bracket-style tournament that matches books in one-on-one "games." LAW will focus on the picture books list for this event and upper elementary teachers can focus on the middle grade book list to share with their students.
- Teachers will choose 8 or 16 books to read or make available to their students for the March Book Madness competition, beginning the week of March 6th.
Each week each classroom will read a minimum of 2 -4 books.
On Fridays, students will vote for their favorite book. The title of the book will be placed on brackets outside each classroom and on digital brackets.
Every Monday Morning during announcements, the winner for the previous week will be announced.
In the end we will see which book is the winner!!
Thanks to Mrs. Leah Carter, our K-2 Literacy Coach for setting up this event for the whole school to enjoy!
Vocabulary Parade March 9th 2:20- 2:50 p.m back field weather permitting!
All grade levels will be assigned a category of vocabulary words. Students can dress up like their word or make a poster representing the word/definition.
Grade K - Gr. K Science words having to do with Weather or Seasons
Grade 1 - Gr. 1 Science Words
Grade 2 - Gr. 2 Social Studies Words
Grade 3 -Gr. 3 Math Words
Grade 4 -Gr. 4 Science Words
Grade 5 - Gr. 5 Social Studies Words
*Students will prepare their costume or representation (poster board is acceptable) at home. Please make sure your child brings it to school on March 9th.
Last year we had a “Parts of Speech Parade”. Students really enjoyed participating and making a costume or a poster board display. We would like to repeat the event but use essential vocabulary words from grade level subjects. Students can make a costume or a poster board representation; both models should provide a written definition of the word.
Below is a list of words that our students will need to understand to succeed in the subject indicated below. Please choose a word from the list. By participating in the Vocabulary Parade preparation, your child will not only have fun, but learn new vocabulary words to help them be successful in school.
Please make sure if you choose a to make a costume - a coat should be able to fit under it; we will be parading outside weather permitting. If you are not able to make a costume, a poster board with the word and definition will do!
Parents are invited to the event if weather permits us to use the back field. The event will take place from 2:20- 2:50 p.m. on March 9th. However if the weather is not cooperative students will parade inside and parents will not be permitted to attend. Fingers-crossed for good weather.

A Poem in My Pocket
Students will be making pocket holders to wear on this day. In the pocket they will place either a poem they wrote or a copy of their favorite poem to share. When they are out and about in the school, they can stop and share their poem with anyone they bump into. Teachers should have a poem in their pocket too!
Panther Leadership Team /Reading a Narrative Writing or a Children's Book at Lunch to our Younger Students!
Book Tree
Our students love decorating our front lobby tree. In February students wrote nice things about the staff on hearts and placed them on the tree. I can honestly say it made the students feel good and the staff feel appreciated.
This month, students will have the opportunity to write the title of a book they read or one that was read to them on a "book" cut-out and place it on our lighted tree in the hallway to further promote the importance of reading!
And to Top it All Off! Don't forget the Scholastic Book Fair! March 6-10
Get ready! The ASPTO sponsored Scholastic Book Fair is coming to the Lura A. White School the week of March 6-10, with Parent's Night on Wednesday, March 8 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm. Hundreds of books, at all reading and interest levels, will be available to purchase at very reasonable prices. The school library receives 50% of all sales to be used for future Scholastic Book purchases. It's a great opportunity to stock up on books to use as gifts, not only during the upcoming holidays, but also for birthdays and special occasions! A Scholastic flier will be going home with your student so you can see some of the many choices that are available. Shopping online is also a great option if you can't make it to the Fair this year. You can shop at scholastic.com/fair from Mar. 6-10
Ewallet is a way for your child/children to go shopping without having to bring in money. Visit our Book Fair Homepage at http://www.scholastic.com/bf/law to learn more and to create an account.
Volunteers are welcomed, and truly needed during this busy week! Whatever you can do would be greatly appreciated! Please contact Linda Atwood at latwood@asrsd.org or 978-772-8600 ext. 1119 if you are interested in helping. Thanks to all Lura A. White families for your continued support of your children and our wonderful library! We look forward to sharing this week with you!
Parents/ Caregivers can do several things to encourage reading at home:
Parents/ Guardians can do several things to encourage reading at home:
- They can help set up a space in the home where students feel comfortable yet awake. This space should have good lighting and limited distractions.
- Parents/ Guardians need to provide access to lots of different types of genres of books for children to access by choice.
- Parents/ Guardians should engage their children by reading with them no matter their age/ grade. It can look like a shared reading where the parent/ guardian reads a page and child reads another, or the parent/ guardian reads to child to increase listening comprehension or possibly the parent/ guardian read a chapter book and set time at the end of the day to discuss the sections that were read.
- The use of play-away devices or other technology can help increase engagement and access to higher level books.
- Parents/ Guardians should be aware of not to correct every single mistake that the student makes. This experience at home should feel uplifting and stress free. It is okay to let the child try to decode an unknown word and then provide the word.
