Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!
A different Issue to Read
Dear Families,
These are challenging times for the Clarenceville School District, our state, our country, and our world. We are complying with the Governor’s directive to close all schools to students as of March 16, 2020. The Clarenceville School District will resume school on Monday, April 6, 2020 after our Spring Break.
The closure is to mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus. We are living in a time of rapidly changing information. We are committed to sending regular communication and we appreciate your continued attention to these email messages.
It is important to keep the learning to continue to happen at home. This issue is going to discuss all of the information and resources that we have available to you. Thank you for your continued support at home!
Your Proud Principal,
Melissa Carruth, Ed.S

How to support my Child and What to say during this Covid-19 time?
Remain calm and reassuring.
- Children will react to and follow your verbal and nonverbal reactions.
- What you say and do about COVID-19, current prevention efforts, and related events can either increase or decrease your children’s anxiety.
- If true, emphasize to your children that they and your family are fine.
- Remind them that you and the adults at their school are there to keep them safe and healthy.
- Let your children talk about their feelings and help reframe their concerns into the appropriate perspective.
Make yourself available.
- Children may need extra attention from you and may want to talk about their concerns, fears, and questions.
- It is important that they know they have someone who will listen to them; make time for them.
- Tell them you love them and give them plenty of affection.
Avoid excessive blaming.
- When tensions are high, sometimes we try to blame someone.
- It is important to avoid stereotyping any one group of people as responsible for the virus.
- Be aware of any comments that other adults are having around your family. You may have to explain what comments mean if they are different than the values that you have at home.
Monitor television viewing and social media.
- Limit television viewing or access to information on the Internet and through social media. Try to avoid watching or listening to information that might be upsetting when your children are present.
- Speak to your child about how many stories about COVID-19 on the Internet may be based on rumors and inaccurate information.
- Talk to your child about factual information of this disease—this can help reduce anxiety.
- Constantly watching updates on the status of COVID-19 can increase anxiety—avoid this.
- Be aware that developmentally inappropriate information (i.e., information designed for adults) can cause anxiety or confusion, particularly in young
- Engage your child in games or other interesting activities instead.
Be honest and accurate.
- In the absence of factual information, children often imagine situations far worse than reality.
- Don’t ignore their concerns, but rather explain that at the present moment very few people in this country are sick with COVID-19.
- Children can be told this disease is thought to be spread between people who are in close contact with one another—when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
- It is also thought it can be spread when you touch an infected surface or object, which is why it is so important to protect yourself.
- For additional factual information contact your school nurse, ask your doctor, or check the https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html web
What should our Covid-19 time off look like each day?
Maintain a normal routine to the extent possible.
- Keep to a regular schedule, as this can be reassuring and promotes physical health.
- Encourage your children to keep up with their schoolwork and extracurricular activities, but don’t push them if they seem overwhelmed.
- Monitor and watch the amount of screen time that happens.
- Teachers will be providing electronic learning and non-electronic learning opportunities.
Below is an example of a schedule that you can maintain....

Need Food -- Free Breakfast and Lunch
In response to Michigan’s COVID-19 school closure, Clarenceville School District, in partnership with Southwest Food Excellence (SFE) and Trinity Transportation have developed the following plan to continue food service to ALL Clarenceville students. Unfortunately, we are only able to provide meals for children, and not adult family members.
Beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020, Clarenceville School families will have a couple options to pick up grab-and-go meals for their children: Clarenceville High School from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Mobile Locations throughout the District – Schedule is below.
The first day of food distribution will be Tuesday, March 17, 2020 and will continue Wednesday March 18, 2020, and Friday March 20, 2020. Thereafter, food will be distributed every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout the length of the closure, including the district’s regularly scheduled Spring break (March 28-April 5).
Food will be distributed using a “drive-thru” and “walk-up” model. Food amounts will be on a per child basis, and will include breakfast and lunch meals. On Mondays and Wednesdays (and first Tuesday), the food distribution will include two days of grab-and-go meals, and on Fridays, three days of meals will be distributed. While this is the initial plan, we will continue to monitor the situation and make changes as necessary to meet the demand and nutritional needs of our Clarenceville School District students.

March is Reading Month can still continue
Just because we are not in school, we can still have fun with March is Reading Month
Fun days can happen at home to honor the fun of reading:
- 20th - Flashlight Friday with PJs
- 27th - Wear a shirt or jersey of your Favorite Sports Team
When we get back, the following will happen:
- Bookmark Contest deadline will continue until we get back. The first day back, we will allow students to turn in.
- Send in all of your basketballs from the time off and we will do daily drawings when we get back.
- A class MVP will be awarded to the student that has shown the most effort reading this month.
Continue to tweet and tag Grandview on social media or email the pictures to the principal or class room teacher so we can honor our readers.
Tuesday Night Night and Every Evening Night Night
If you cannot view Live, no worries, it is published to the Grandview Facebook Page so that families can view it at their earliest convenience for your children and their evening schedule. The point of this activity is to foster the importance of 10-20 minutes of reading each night. Remember it is super easy to view.....just visit the Grandview Facebook Homepage. I will be taking suggestions for books, so post away in our site so that I know what my Grandview readers want to hear at night. Can't wait to do what I love most....reading to students!!!

If you child walks home, they may, but they will not be dismissed by adults.

Grandview used to have a Career Day and we want to bring it back. The State of Michigan and our School Improvement Plan find the value in Career Development of our students. In order for this event to be successful, we need lots of speakers. We would like our career speakers to be Grandview parents or community members. If you are interested in presenting and joining our fun, please reach out to me. The event runs in the afternoon only on the 24th.

Shoe Donation
Grandview FOG is starting their next fundraiser. This fundraiser does not need you to purchase one thing or give any money. This fundraiser is collecting used shoes. So if you plan on cleaning out closets, purchasing new shoes for the holidays, or have students who feet have grown through their shoes, we would gladly take them!
Outside of the music room is a large box for the shoe donation! So feel free to drop them off in the box or drop off in the office!!
This fundraiser not only will give back to Grandview, but it will give back to the world for students who are in need!!! It will continue through March!!

School Store Fundraiser
Our next office fundraiser continues for our students. The teachers received some gift cards this past week at the mid-way point in this fundraiser and were so excited with what they received. Remember, this is a Win-Win fundraiser as the school earns money, as well as, the classroom teacher. This fundraiser helped to purchase the clay that is used for art, this spring's assembly, as well as, the supplies for March is Reading Month.
School Store is an online shopping mall with over 400 nationally-known merchants including Sears, Target, Oriental Trading Co., Office Depot, Toys"R"Us, Family Book Store and many more. When your family and friends make everyday purchases from their favorite merchants through SchoolStore.com, your school, and classroom teacher earns money.
All you need to do is going to www.schoolstore.net and enter Grandview Elementary School's code (0000009438) and then shop away.
Box Tops for Education
We have a BoxTop Collection that is due March 1st. So any box tops that can be cut out are due February 26th.
Please remember that Box Tops are moving away from clipping paper box tops and moving to scanning qualifying receipts to earn school money.
Last year, Grandview earned $757.50 with Box Tops and we do not want to lose that revenue.
There is a Grandview parent that is already earning box tops via apps. Please download the app and log in, it is easy. Questions, stop in the office!!!
