Geography

Maldives is a bunch of small islands located southwest of India in the India Ocean. Altogether there are 1,190 islands. Most of the land is flat and that is why Maldives is the flattest country in the world. The islands are on a underwater volcano. The city of Male is located at the southern tip of North Male Atoll. The climate is tropical and the rainy season is May to August. Maldives gets a lot of storms. The islands are about 2.3 meters above sea level and no island is higher then 7 feet so sometimes the islands disappear and come back because water covers them up. This occurs because the water rises and the islands are not much higher than sea level. Many tourist like to come to Maldives to get away from the cold because it's hot there.

Sports

The most popular sport in Maldives is soccer. There is a soccer field on every island where boys play every evening and there is a national league where they have tournaments in their stadiums where many fans watch. Maldives has a soccer team called the Maldives National Football Team. Also their home stadium is the National Football Stadium and their biggest win was against Mongolia where they won 12-0. They are in the South Asian Conference. Cricket is also a popular sport in Maldives. Another popular sport is Bashi, which is traditionally for girls.
