OECHS Open House for Freshmen and Sophomores: September 19th (4:30-6:30)
Sophomore/Junior Parent Meeting (at the end of Open House)
Are you interested in planning a junior-senior Prom? A Senior Trip for our current juniors? Come prepared to sign up to lead or be part of the committees that will help make these events happen! During this meeting we will organize and make plans for future meetings.
Please note, this is not a meeting to discuss ideas or fundraising. The goal, at this time, is to organize and ensure there is a plan moving forward to have those discussions as committees. Hope to see you there!
Junior News
Our trip to NC State was a success! Thank you students and Ms. Hutsell for making this possible!
Would you like to go on a college or university tour? Work with Mr. Strope to plan the next adventure!
Juniors are also reminded to bring their laptops and log into Blackboard for grade checks during Seminar this week!
English
English I Honors: This week, students finished up their study of Narrative Nonfiction with a test on Unit 2. We began our new unit, Unit 3, Poetry this week, and began analyzing poetry together in class. Students also began their Poetry Booklets, a project that will continue through the end of the unit (Wednesday, Sept 25). We will begin our second formal essay assignment, a Poetry Explication, next week.
English IV Honors: This week students have been learning about society during the Middle Ages in preparation for The Canterbury Tales. They are using the skill of explication to increase and enhance understanding.
Regarding the Graduation Project: Students have had the required forms since the beginning of the semester. The six-week grading period and several students are still missing forms. The zero for the missing items will be replaced when the forms are submitted.
There are a few students who have yet to secure a mentor. The final due date for all forms, products, and mentor log is November 26, and presentations will take place on December 5th. Please help your child manage his or her time to ensure they are prepared to complete this task in a timely manner.
Math
Honors Math 2: Several grades will be entered this weekend for Math 2. The current average in both classes is an 89. Last Friday students participated in an activity to discuss quadratic functions using gummy bears. They will use this activity on Monday to continue learning about the key features of the graph of a quadratic function. On Tuesday students will have a project workday for their Unit 2 project that was assigned last Wednesday. The project is due Thursday and the Unit 2 Test is that day as well.

Social Studies
Civics and Economics Honors: This week in C & E we had our test to wrap up our study on Political Parties. We are beginning a large unit on the Constitution. Our first topic is the Philosophy of the Constitution. This week we have looked at how Athenian Democracy has influenced our government, along with Enlightenment thinkers like John Locke and Montesquieu. Next week we will take a look at the Magna Carta and the English Bill of Rights to see how these documents directly influenced our Founding Fathers in government.
AP World History: This week we have been studying Ancient China. We have taken a look at some key Chinese Dynasties to include the Zhou and Qin, who have had a tremendous impact on not only Chinese History, but World History, as well. Next week we will be having our test on China. B Day will be taking their test on Friday and A Day will be taking their test on Thursday. Study Guides will be given out and students will need to prepare for their tests using those Study Guides. The test is mostly writing, and this is a skill that we have, and will continue to work on, throughout the year. Students need to remember that good writing applies to all disciplines.
AH-1: We have completed and tested our study of the causes and effects of the American Revolution. Students have had several writing assignments including a fun Funko Pop art/writing activity.
I will continue to emphasize historical thinking & writing skills by requiring that students support their answers with specific evidence which will be required on the APWH EXAM. Our next unit of study will examine the Articles of Confederation & the US Constitution.
