Thesis Statement
People should have control In their society to where everything Is fair for everyone, they should be able to decide on whether or not they want to participate in the governments laws that take away human rights
Summary
In “The Lottery” and “Harrison Bergeron”, they both show a community manipulated by the government. In “The Lottery” the people where controlled to keep on participating in the tradition of The Lottery each year without a say. In “Harrison Bergeron” the government controls everyone’s behavior, the way they think and look without the people’s consent.
Quote:
‘“They do say,"Mr. Adams said to Old Man Warner, who stood next to him, "that over in the north village they're talking of giving up the lottery”’ (Jackson, 4).
Analysis 1:
Mr. Adams Brought it up and it shows that he is interested in ending the lottery because why bring something up if it doesn’t have some type of interest towards you. The only person who opposed to ending it would have been Old Man Warner because he’s a crazy old man who’s obsessed with keeping the tradition. The people should be able to have a choice to stop this and follow human morals.
Quote:
“Scrap metal was hung all over him. Ordinarily, there was a certain symmetry, a military neatness to the handicaps issued to strong people, but Harrison looked like a walking junkyard. In the race of life, Harrison carried three hundred pounds” (Vonnegut 3).
Analysis 2:
The ballerina had weights and an ugly mask on to hide her grace and beauty. She had so much potential but was never able to show all of it off. Since the government controlled and took over all her actions she was nothing more but average.
She never wanted to be in the lottery. Once she found out about her family being chosen she started freaking out. The people in the village didn't have much of a choice on if they wanted to participate in the lottery or not.
