Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #26 2017-2018
Did you know?
Garnet Valley Students in the 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th grades reported whether they had ever tried inhalants in their life times on the 2015 PAYS survey. The PAYS questionnaire describes inhalants as any gases or fumes that can be inhaled for the purpose of being high. While there is typically a low incidence of use, inhalants are highly toxic, easily accessible, and carry long term and seriously damaging effects. Though lifetime use is low across all grades, it is still above state and national percentages for 6th and 10th grades. The percentages of students reporting lifetime use of inhalants are as follows: 6th grade – 4.9 %, 8th grade – 2.0%, 10th grade – 7.3 %, and 12th grade – 3.7%.
Call to action…
Potentially dangerous household products that can be used as inhalants include
“paint thinners and removers, dry-cleaning fluids, degreasers, gasoline, glues, correction fluids, and felt-tip markers, spray paints, deodorant and hair sprays, vegetable oil sprays for cooking, and fabric protector sprays. Nitrous oxide is the most abused of the gases and can be found in whipped cream dispensers and products that boost octane levels in racing cars. Other household or commercial products containing gases include butane lighters, propane tanks, and refrigerants.” (NIDA 7/12) Click on the link below for more information.
