EARLY RELEASE OCTOBER 12
Please make arrangements for early release on October 12, 2018. Typically on an early release day all students go home at 11:45 am.
What are we learning?
We are working on creating stamina while reading to ourselves. We have gone over some strategies in reading for reading a book and how to hold and read a book. We are working on the pattern of words that are: consonants, vowel, consonants (CVC). Examples are CAT, DOG, and MAN. We will be looking at the letters placed in the beginning, middle and end of the words.
We are starting our guided reading groups. Your child will come home with a bag with 1 to 2 books in it that they will need to read to you. These books are on their level of independent reading. They need to practice reading for 10-20 minutes a night. They will need the book bag in their backpack everyday. There is a chance that we can meet with them off their scheduled time.
How do you teach your child to read at home? First turn off the TV and Technology. Sit side by side with your child on the couch or at a dining room table. Watch them point to the words. Yes, it is still okay for our 1st grade friends to point to the words. Encourage them to point underneath the words as they read, matching 1 to 1.
Here are some other strategies:
- Look at the pictures.
- Have them get their mouths ready- say the beginning sound.
- Slowly stretch each letter sound to make words.
- Try to re-read the sentence- does it make sense?
- Flip the vowel sound- try the long or short sound in the word.
- Break the word into chunks you already know -/m/-at . /fl/-at
- Skip the tricky word. Read to the end. Then go back and try again.
- Carefully read the whole word, think about all the word parts.
- Think about what makes sense as you read.

We will be working on citizenship. We will be looking at an American Folk Legend- Johnny Appleseed. We will be exploring how he exhibited good citizenship.

We are starting intentional problem solving where we will be working on strategies to solve word problems. Students will be able to explore math tools. Student should be able to explain how they are solving the problem.

Meals and Snacks
We have noticed that some of our students who go through the lunch line are buying more than one snack. We would never deny your child a snack, but we are seeing students purchase 3 and 4 bags of chips or fruit roll-ups. The part that we are worried about is them sharing with peers at the tables, which we have also noticed this week. Children are often not aware of peers having food allergies, so please discuss this with your child.
You can also contact food services to make requests to what your child is buying through the lunch line. For example: A student would buy 3 ice creams and the lunch staff could not stop him, until the parent puts a block on what he/she could purchase with their lunch money.
To reach the Child Nutrition Office by phone, the number is 469-713-5207.
Snacks In Classroom
We will do snacks after we return from MAPS in the afternoon. Your child can have one snack that is on the healthier side. Think pretzels, Goldfish, Kix cereal, Cheerios, granola, fruit, raisins and fruit leather. Please try to stay away from potato chips and other foods with negative food value.
WE ARE ALLERGY AWARE!
We have some students that have peanut and nut, eggs, soy and strawberry allergies.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES
As the first report card time approaches, teachers will be making arrangements to meet with you about your child's progress. Each teacher will make an appointment calendar available- either electronically or via paper.

LISD does report cards electronically. If you should desire a paper copy, you will need to go into SKYWARD and check the box for a paper report card. Teachers will not know if you have or have not checked the box in SKYWARD.
