Principal's Message - Reopening March 22nd
This week our PPESD School Board took action to approve a full-time reopening to start on Monday, March 22nd. Superintendent Pat Atkins shared this decision with families on Wednesday. Please refer below to his released letter and the detailed plan presented at the Board meeting
In order to move forward to this next phase, we agree to adhere to the California Department of Public Health mandates. In addition to implementing regular sanitation practices we will continue to require students and staff to wear masks or approved face coverings. Furthermore, our daily schedule will keep grade level cohorts separated during food service and recess times. Classroom seating will be set to a minimum distance of four feet.
One challenge with this schedule will be the added traffic to our arrival and dismissal routine. In the morning, there will be added staff members out front to greet cars. We ask that you wait in drop-off line to unload and not drive past others unless directed. Keep in mind, we will once again have four bus routes, and getting the busses in and out of the parking lot is a priority. It is likely that we will be able to accommodate more bus riders. Refer to the updated bus routes in this newsletter and contact the school office to inquire about bus service. In addition, consider carpooling . At the end of the day, we encourage parents who are picking up students to time their arrival after 2:35 in order to allow us to get the busses loaded and exited from the parking lot. Your patience during these times is greatly appreciated.
In regards to food service, we will serve a morning snack and hot lunch to all grade levels. All school meals will continue to be provided free of charge for the remainder of the school year. Distance learning families may still take advantage of curbside meals between 11:00 and 1:00 each day. If they prefer, students are welcome to bring their own snacks and lunches from home. We also encourage students to bring their own water bottles labeled with their name as drinking fountains are not in service.
Because we will be able to reach our required instructional minutes during the school day, daily homework will be significantly reduced. We are asking all in-person students who checked out Chromebooks to return them with the charger by next Thursday, March 18th. This will help us rebuild classroom sets and guarantee that students have access to technology at school.
Many families have already communicated with us a desire to move into or out of our distance learning program. If your family is not comfortable with a full-reopening with adherence to the public health regulations and would like your student to finish out the year in our distance learning program, please let us know no later than next Thursday. Conversely, if your child is currently enrolled in the distance learning program and wants to be on campus for instruction, please let us know as soon as possible.
To help us prepare for March 22nd, I recommend during this next week you start getting your kids used to the extended schedule. Some students may need to modify their sleep schedule so that they can be ready to learn from 8:15 to 2:30 each day. Certainly this might be extra challenging with the time change coming up this weekend!
In the coming days your child's teacher will communicate any changes in class routines or procedures to expect in this transition. I thank you in advance for showing us grace as we adjust to this exciting change. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
FULL-TIME WEEKLY SCHEDULE STARTING 3/22
Every Wednesday is Early Release: 8:15 am -1:00 pm
All in-person learning students who have a school device need return their Chromebook and charger next week. We ask that students return these devices no later than next Thursday, March 18th. Distance Learners may keep their Chromebooks until the end of this school year.
Don't forget we all get one less hour of nightly sleep this weekend! The positive is we get to enjoy more daylight each evening. On March 14th, set your clocks ahead one hour.
Crazy Hair Day
It is not too early to start planning for Crazy Hair Day! In two weeks, we will have this ever popular spirit day and there will be more kids on campus to appreciate the creative hairstyles! Make sure you mark March 26th for this spirit day!
Changes in Bus Transportation for Reopening
