Second Graders checking out the new instruments in Music!
Concert Dates
There will more information being shared in the coming weeks about the upcoming Winter Concerts. In the meantime, here are the days and times to circle on your calendars.
Second Grade - Fourth Grade - Thursday (12/15) 5:30 - 6:30 (HS Auditorium)
Report Cards - Standard Based Grading
The elementary report cards will look different this year from years past. If you came to conferences, you likely saw a draft of what the new report card will look like. One difference that I wanted to touch on is the revised grading scale detailed below:
- 3 - Proficient (The student can consistently perform the skills needed to meet the standard.)
- 2 - Working Towards (The student has demonstrated a part of a skill or has not consistently demonstrated the skills needed to meet the standard.)
- 1 - Not Yet (The student has not yet demonstrated skills related to the academic standard.)
- X - Not assessed this term (The report card and standards are a map of the learning targets for the year. However, not every standard is assessed every term. Therefore it will be normal for there to be "X"s in many squares - especially early in the year.)
One thing to keep in mind is that teachers are looking at proficiency in terms of end of the year expectations. As a result, it would be normal and expected that in many instances students will likely receive 1s or 2s this fall. These scores are not equivalents to As, Bs, Cs, etc. Rather, they are meant to be more accurate reflections of a student's learning.
Inclement Weather
Though we've had a beautiful fall, we wanted to share some reminders in case it were to get colder here in the coming months ;)
- School Closings - Closings will be shared ASAP (more information here)
- Late Starts/Early Outs - Though rare, school may start two-hours late or be dismissed early given certain weather patterns or conditions.
- Recess - Students will have outside recess when the temperature is above zero. Please make sure they are dressed appropriately.
Black and Orange Day - Monday, October 31st
RAILS Way
Of course, we also know that it is a lot more motivating for students to be rewarded for "right" behavior than punished for "wrong" behavior. As a result, students that are noticed demonstrating correct behaviors will get RAILS Way Tickets. Students that earn tickets will be able to participate in a monthly all-school reward (for November it is all-school bingo!) and be eligible for a drawing each Friday to win a prize. The tickets will also be sent home with the students so you can put it on the fridge as a reminder or high five them for doing the job well.
In November, teachers and staff will be especially looking for students demonstrating behavior expectations while in the hallway. Check below for the expectations we have and the language we use when talking about these expectations w/ students.
