Welcome to Hughes Elementary!

Never Stop Exploring!
Thank you for a great first week of school! I was able to visit each classroom multiple times last week and it was a pleasure to see the students actively engaged in learning. It was almost as if we never were gone for the summer!
During the morning announcements, I have shared with the students that our character trait focus for the first six weeks is respect. We have discussed how having good manners is one way that we treat others with respect. The staff and I have been modeling this good manners trait with the students this week and will continue to focus on respect for the entire first six weeks. At the end of the six weeks, I will recognize two students per grade level at the awards assembly that have been a strong role model for using good manners. These students will receive the Principal's Award. Speaking of respect, I greatly appreciate how you all have been patient and respectful while waiting on our afternoon car dismissal.
Car dismissal during the first two weeks of school usually takes the longest. We have implemented a few new strategies such as loading ten cars instead of six and having PPCD/Pre-K car riders move to the front of the school to help alleviate some of the numbers. We are also dismissing walkers, bike riders, and bus riders first so that cars are not in motion as these students walk off the school grounds. This is a safety measure and we appreciate your understanding. Our student numbers have grown, so that means more car riders. We are always open to solution-focused feedback and willing to try new ideas. We appreciate your patience!
We have several events planned for the month of September that are designed to include our families. I look forward to partnering with you this school year. Never stop exploring!

DISMISSAL
We are GROWING and safety is our number one concern. Please plan for delays in picking up your child the first few weeks of school as students and staff are adjusting to the routine. Each child will have a tag attached to their backpacks with how he/she will be going home. Please no ride changes after 2:30 p.m. and no student pick-up from the office after 2:45.We are releasing walkers, bike riders, and bus riders first, so that the students can begin walking before the car line starts to move. Students in grade K-5 that are car riders will be lined up by grade level in the gym. Pre-K/PPCD/SLC students that are car riders will be dismissed in front of the school. Please have your child's green name tag on your dashboard so that the name will be called quickly. The tags are available at Meet the Teacher and in the office. Please have all student car seats or boosters on the right side of the car to help with arrival and dismissal.
Maps of arrival and dismissal will be posted on the campus website and a copy will be handed out on Meet the Teacher Night.
