Construction Projects in Federal Way Public Schools
April 2019 Construction Updates
We’re moving through the design process for the first six schools to be rebuilt thanks to voter approval of the school construction bond in Nov. 2017, and we have several important updates to share below!
Thomas Jefferson High School
TJHS is nearing the completion of the design development phase and is scheduled to begin construction in winter 2020. We're incorporating student, staff, and community feedback throughout the process, and your next opportunity to share your voice is coming up in May 2019. Take a look at the flythrough video below to get a closer look at the current design of the new school.
Totem Middle School and Star Lake Elementary
The most recent construction schedule for these two schools indicated that Totem Middle School and Star Lake Elementary would remain on-site through the duration of construction, then move into their brand-new schools in Fall 2021. Now that we have our construction partners engaged at the earliest possible point in the process, they recently shared some challenges with our proposed construction schedule. These challenges include an aggressive schedule that will result in significant additional costs (i.e. overtime) and a risk of not completing the project for an on-time move-in at the start of the 2021-22 school year.
As a result of this critical input, the district is responding by adjusting the construction schedule to provide sufficient time for construction, ensuring the best use of our bond dollars and a smooth start in the new schools. The Star Lake Elementary and Totem Middle School communities are excited for new schools that promise to provide a modernized learning environment, with more room, enhanced security, greater functionality, and increased flexibility moving forward. Check out the flythrough video below to get an overall look of the current design for these two schools.
Mirror Lake, Wildwood, and Lake Grove Elementary
These three schools are in the final stages of preparing for construction to begin this summer. In April and May, you may notice construction fencing begin to go up at these schools, as well as other site preparation work. At Mirror Lake Elementary, the playground is being relocated, so it can be safely accessed in the 2019-20 school year. At Lake Grove and Wildwood, crews are removing underground storage tanks during Spring Break, April 8–12.
