August 16 - August 20
2nd Block: Multicultural Literature
This week we will continue working on unit#1. We will be completing Springboard 1.3, 1.5, 1.7, and 1.8. We are focusing on the following terms and concepts: alliteration, connotation, paradox, symbolism, tone, diction, and rhetoric.
Please remember to bring your independent reading book to class daily. Also, we will be using the Springboard book Monday - Thursday this week.
3rd Block: American Literature
This week we will continue working on unit#1. We will be completing Springboard 1.2, 1.8, and 1.12. We are focusing on the following concepts: misplaced modifiers and syntax. By the end of the week, we will be working on a paragraph in which we use 3 - 5 of our readings to answer the following question: Does America still provide access to the American Dream?
Please remember to bring your independent reading book to class daily. Also, we will be using the Springboard book Monday - Wednesday this week.
4th Block: Writing in the Content Areas
This week we will continue working on unit#1 (paragraph writing). We are going to be focusing on writing persuasive paragraphs by learning how to effectively use rhetorical devices. By the end of the week, the students should have rough drafts of all four types of paragraphs (narrative, expository, descriptive, and persuasive). We will also be working on using transitions in writing, types of sentences, and end punctuation.
Please remember to bring your independent reading book to class daily!
August 23 - August 27
Happy Monday! It's going to be a great week!
This week, we will focus on writing embedded assessment #1. We will read "Tipping System Exacerbates Unfair Pay at Restaurants." After reading, we will write a rhetorical analysis essay. Remember to continue reading your novel!
3rd Block: American Literature
This week, we will finish writing our formative paragraph: Does America Still Provide Access to the American Dream? (the American Promise). We will then move to the next section of this unit where we focus on American voices. We will read poems by Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, and Julia Alvarez, and then we will compare their visions of America. Remember to continue reading your novel!
4th Block: Writing in the Content Areas
This week, we will revise and publish your favorite paragraph for a test grade. We will also review unit #1. The test for unit #1 is this Thursday! Remember to continue reading your novel!
August 30 - September 3
This week, we will be wrapping up unit #1. We will talk about cultural criticism and we will read "Speaking with Hands" and "Stranger in the Village." By the end of the week, you will write a reflective essay. You will need to bring your Springboard and independent reading book every day this week.
3rd Block: American Literature
This week, you will write the second formative paragraph: Does America Still Provide Access to the American Dream? (American Voices). On Tuesday, you will take an interim assessment. I will introduce A Raisin in the Sun, and we will read and watch portions of the play. You will need to bring your Springboard and independent reading book every day this week.
4th Block: Writing in the Content Areas
This week, we will work on the rules of punctuation (commas, apostrophes, colons, semicolons, and hyphens). I will introduce unit #2 (essay writing). By the end of the week, you will start your first 5-paragraph essay.
September 7 - September 10
This week, we will wrap up Unit #1 and begin Unit #2. The test over Unit #1 is today (Tuesday)! We will also go to the media center today to choose new independent reading books. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we will start Unit #2 by studying archetypes. You will complete a poster project by the end of the week.
3rd Block: American Literature
This week, you will be writing your 3rd formative paragraph: Does America Still Provide Access to the American Dream? (Money and the American Dream). We will finish reading and watching A Raisin in the Sun, and we will read and analyze quotations about money. On Tuesday, we will go to the media center to choose new independent reading books.
4th Block: Writing in the Content Areas
This week, we will continue the 5-paragraph essay (class essay). We will also review commonly confused homophones. On Tuesday, we will go to the media center to choose new independent reading books.
