Growth Mindset: Cultivate Empathy
"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb inside of his skin and walk around it. Atticus Finch in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird
Some believe that education should not try to help Ss develop empathy, but for us brave educators at the middle school level, we know how important it will be for our Ss to grow this critical skill.
Affectual Empathy: being able to feel the emotions with the other person.
Cognitive Empathy is the ability to recognize and understand the emotions of others without feeling the emotion itself.
What we know is that Ss do not inherently speak the language of empathy. Technology is making it increasingly more difficult for our Ss to practice the skill of empathy because much of their communication is not conducted face to face.
Emotional Intelligence is one of the top 10 skills employers are seeking, and D101 has identified Empathy as one of the most critical Attributes in our Center of the Wheel.
What we need to do is to create opportunities for Ss to practice empathy intentionally. What can we do?
- Use Collaborative Projects
- Require Ss to hold face to face conversations with each other
- Expose Ss to different cultures through literature, research, video clips, guest speakers
- Use technology to connect to cultures outside of Western Springs
Practice Empathic Speaking, Listening and Body Language
You could try this right away!
- Pair Ss up and have one Ss read a script while the other using only body language to communicate. See if the Ss notice what good listening looks like . Have the Ss change their body language 3-4 times.
- Require Ss to have a 1-minute face to face discussion about a topic you are studying.
- Have Ss list what good listening looks like then practice demonstrating.
- Use Affective Statements: I feel________ when _____________ because ____________. Model these for the Ss first. These can be silly at first but must become more serious or applicable to the Ss lives. Rewrite non-affective statements: "You made me made because you were rude during lunch" could be turned into "I felt angry when you decided to sit with someone else at lunch because I enjoy talking to you."
- Next week Discipline: More on Building Empathy at McClure
