BEATRICE MIDDLE SCHOOL MESSENGER
December, 2020 - January, 2021
PRINCIPAL POINTS BY JOHN JAROSH
A+ ORGANIZING STRATEGIES
As the school year gets underway, your middle grader will be calmer and more confident if she knows she's on top of things. Strategies like these can help her get organized.
Create "Command Centers"
Encourage your tween to keep school-related materials in specific places so she'll always know where they are. She could store homework supplies on a kitchen shelf or in a box on her bedroom desk. Have her choose a spot near the front door for items like her backpack, musical instrument, and gym shoes so they'll be ready to go when she is.
Use "5-Minute Wonders"
Suggest these habits that take only a few minutes. Before leaving school each day, she can scan her planner to check dates and deadlines for tests, assignments, and forms. That way, she'll know which books and papers to take home. At home, she could quickly leaf through her folders and notebooks, then file what she needs and throw away what she doesn't.
Keep An Estimate Log
Knowing how long tasks actually take will give your tween an edge when organizing her time. Suggest that she time herself completing different types of schoolwork, such as doing research for a report or reviewing Spanish vocabulary. She could write the times in her planner and refer to them later to help her budget accurately in the future.

NOTES FROM THE NURSE
Due to the increase in positive cases of COVID-19 in our district, it is very important to screen your child before sending them to school to avoid any possible transmission of the virus in school. This link can be used to help screen your child at home.
If your child is showing symptoms of COVID-19, you can use the following flow chart to help you decide if you should send your child to school. If you have any questions determining if your child should attend school, please call your child's school and speak with the nurse.
FLU SHOT CLINIC
BMS had a very successful flu shot clinic on October 26th. Thanks to BCHHC Immunization Clinic staff and nurses, 89 students and 34 staff were immunized against influenza. Thank you to the parents who gave permission for their student to be immunized at school. We will hopefully have a healthier influenza season due to this!
If your child missed our Flu shot clinic this year, BCHHC immunization clinic will continue to give flu shots at their clinic. Please call 402-223-2366 to make an appointment for you or your child.
ASTHMA/ALLERGY ACTION PLAN
Any student diagnosed with Asthma or Anaphylaxis due to allergy (includes food allergy, bee sting allergy etc...) needs to have an updated Asthma/Allergy action plan on file in the nurse’s office every year. If you have not had your doctor fill one out yet for your student for this school year, please get this done ASAP. If we do not have one on file we will use the Rule 59 protocol for any life-threatening “breathing” emergency. Click here for more information regarding Rule 59.
**If your child requires an Epi-Pen for any allergy please make sure we have one for him/her prescribed by their physician in the nurse's office. Also, if your child requires a rescue inhaler for asthma, please make sure we have an inhaler for him/her in the nurse’s office. Please remember to fill out a medication consent form when sending an inhaler with your child. If you would like your child to carry the inhaler with them this is also possible by marking the box in the medication consent form. This is especially important when your child is in PE class.**
