Make-Up Days Announced

With the winter weather we've missed some school. Make-up dates have been announced and students will now report on February 16 and March 5. Both of these will be full school days. Stay tuned for further announcements for the remainder of the hours to be made up.

Iowa Assessments

The testing window has been determined for this year's Iowa Assessments. Middle school students around the district will be testing Monday, March 9-Thursday, March 12. All students will test March 9-12. Expanding Opportunity students will report to their respective high schools for classes on March 12. EO students will make up any tests missed when they return from the high school.

Upcoming Fine Arts' Concerts

Franklin's fine arts groups had a fantastic fall concert and we're excited to hear the improvement at the upcoming concerts. Make sure to mark the dates on your calendar.

Thursday, February 19

  • 7:00-8:30PM: Jazz Band, Chamber Orchestra, and Illumination Show Choir

Monday, February 23

  • 6:00-7:00PM: 6th Grade Fine Arts
  • 7:00-8:00PM: 7th Grade Fine Arts
  • 8:00-9:00PM: 8th Grade Fine Arts

Structures and formats will remain similar to the fall. With every Franklin student being involved, and limited parking space, it's important for families to be swift with their departure. We look forward to seeing all of you.

Before & After School

A friendly reminder...

While the weather is nice students are expected to wait outside the building before school. With these colder temperatures students have been waiting inside prior to the morning bell ringing. Regardless of location students are to conduct themselves in an orderly manner by keeping their hands and feet to themselves, as well as not chasing one another around. After school it is expected that students leave the building and begin their way home by bike or on foot. All rides should be here to pick you up within 15 minutes of dismissal time. The only students that should be in the building are those working with teachers at after school activities or those working in the homework center. Students are not to be walking the halls and will be asked to leave if not with a teacher or coach.

Student Council-Horizons Lunchbox Fundraiser

Last year the Horizon’s Lunchbox Fundraiser generated nearly $48,000 for the Meals on Wheels program. Our Franklin students helped in packing every lunchbox order that went out into the community. Our students helped out again this year the week of February 9. What a great few days of service our students and Ms. Dvorak provided. This is the sixth year the group has helped.

January 30 Activity Day Recap

We had a wonderful day to enjoy camaraderie and to celebrate the hard work that's been accomplished so far this year. For our 8th graders we couldn't have asked for better weather. Veteran and rookie skiers stayed fairly healthy with only a few injuries. Our 7th graders split the day between the bowling alley and activities back at school. Our 6th graders had a great day at the ice arena learning some great new activities. This day wouldn't have been possible without the hard work of our staff and volunteers. Thanks to all for a great day!

Thunderbolt Band Joins Forces @ Roughriders

On Friday, February 6, 110 Franklin band students joined forces with 40 McKinley band students to provide a giant pep band for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders hockey game. Although the team lost, the students had a fantastic time, and the fans were excited to have live music supporting their team. A portion of the ticket sales from Friday's game will be donated to the Franklin & McKinley band program in appreciation of the bands performance. Thanks to all of the Franklin parents that helped chaperone this event.
