LAN
LAN stands for Local Area Network. Local area networks are usually set up in area with computers in a close proximity of each other such as schools, small business', and homes. A LAN is useful for shares resources like files, games, printers etc. A LAN is often connected to other LAN's making it a WAN or connects to a WAN for access to the internet.
Most LAN are inexpensive using equipment such as Ethernet cables, hubs and network adapters.
WAN
WAN stands for Wide Area Network. WAN goes over a large geographic area, like a state or country. WANs connect multiple smaller networks suck as local area networks(LANs) or metro area network (MANs). The internet is a WAN. The technology used for WANs are often much more expensive.
