The City of Bones
"C'mon, man!"
Characterization
Another "decent" example would be; "Clary felt a scream rising up in her chest." This time, the example shows feelings and a possible action.
Theme
For starters, Clary finds out that a world she didn't expect existed actually does in fact exist, leaving her just a little bit confused. Another example of this theme would be when Valentine (antagonist, hallelujah!) claims to be Clarissa's (Clary's) father, and Jocelyn's (Clary's mother) wife. Clary doesn't exactly believe this, but she still believes it could be true, but she had no idea that those words would come from that man's mouth.
Figurative language
I'll give you a few examples of said figurative language, and even list the page(s) it's on.
Page two; "He had electric blue dyed hair that stuck up around his head like the tendrils of a startled octopus." This example is actually a simile. "...that stuck up around his head LIKE the tendrils..."
Page three; "Coursing through his veins like fire." This is another simile about the same character, (that turns out to not even be a character that has anything to do with the story.) and the part that makes it a simile is "veins like fire."
Page four; "The girl was a pale ghost." The example listed is a metaphor, and could also be used as personification, but women are not just objects. Like, or as were not used at all in the sentence, therefore it's not quite a simile, but when you don't use like or as, it will most likely be a metaphor, like this example.
