October 2022 - John Dewey High School
A Message from Your Principal
Dear Dewey Family,
September Success! We did great in our return to school, we began our classes with great focus and integrity, and are now ready to jump into fall! Our celebrations for September included our first Townhall, club fair, and so much more. Everything that made September's success possible is due to the commitment of all Dewey’s stakeholders, turning this house into our home.
During October, we can look forward to Hispanic Heritage month celebration, Fall Festival, trips, celebrating our first Hall of Fame winners, opening of clubs and moving towards mid-term marking period. It will be a month of great diligence and perseverance for each one of us. It will be greatly rewarding to focus your energy on classes, respecting your teachers, and one another.
Lastly, October also brings about our first community challenge: To be diligent and persevere with positive actions for ourselves and others. As we enter the new month, give some consideration to how you will implement a plan to achieve your “extra degree.” Don’t forget to share with us your journey of success using the QR code on our 212 Bulletin Board. I can’t wait to see and read about how you DEW in achieving our 212 principles!
Looking forward to experiencing all the great things October will bring!

National Coming Out Day - Tuesday Oct 11th
On Tuesday, October 11th, we will be celebrating National Coming Out Day! Our GSA Club will be celebrating during lunch periods and having our annual Rainbow Ribbon Campaign, where students pledge to be allies to the LGBTQ+ community by wearing a rainbow ribbon
On National Coming Out Day, we celebrate “Coming Out” as LGBTQ+ people. “Coming Out” is a phrase used by the queer community as a moment when we share our gender identities and/or sexual orientation. Coming out is not something we do once, but instead something we continually do throughout our lives and on October 11th we celebrate that! National Coming Out Day is also a day for allies to show support for LGBTQ+ people and to celebrate their identities.

We are encouraging students, family, friends, and the rest of the Dewey community to attend even if it's just for a short visit. The beach cleanups have been a great way to do a good deed, bond with students and staff, make connections to the community and organizations, and learn how to protect and preserve Coney Island Creek's important estuarine ecosystem. Students can sign up and get permission slips from Lane Rosen, Rm 249, Fil Dispenza, room 121 and Wade Moody, Library – (small room)

PSAL All-Access Program
The goal of the PSAL All-Access program is to increase access to PSAL programming for schools that have traditionally been underserved. While there are schools in New York City with over 40 athletic teams, there are also schools that have historically had access to zero PSAL teams or minimal access as defined by having less than 6 teams. Additionally, resource limitations have resulted in many newer and smaller schools experiencing difficulties with building adequate athletic programs at their schools. Associated challenges include difficulty filling rosters due to limited enrollment, limited school resources to supplement costs, staffing shortages, and facility access.
