2nd Quarter Grade Cards
Transportation Changes
We will no longer be accepting transportation changes through social media, text messages, etc. through our secretary. There are times that Meagan is not here, she is in the middle of something, etc. and it makes it too easy for those types of notifications to get lost. Therefore, for the safety of students getting where they need to be, please either call the office or contact your child's teacher if you need to make transportation changes for your child. Thank you!
Brand New Literacy Night
We are very excited to announce that we will be having a literacy night full of fun activities and food for students in grades PreK-6. This will be on the evening of January 24th from 5:30-7:00 at the elementary school. Watch for fliers and more information to come from your child's teacher, and to be posted on the district website and Facebook page.
SKIP Thank You!
A big thank you to our SKIP group for providing a wonderful opportunity for our students again this year to go to the Hangar and watch a Christmas movie. The students really enjoyed it, and for many, it was their first time being at a movie theater. Thank you so much!!
Nodaway-Holt Pre-Kindergarten Enrollment for 2024-2025
The Nodaway-Holt Elementary School will be having a full day Pre-K starting the 2024-2025 school year. We will host a Pre-Kindergarten Sign-Up for all children living in the Nodaway-Holt R-VII School District who will be four (4) years of age before August 1, 2024. This will take place during the PAT/Pre-K screenings in March at the elementary school. During this time you will need to fill out an application, show two (2) proofs of residence (mail, rental agreement, utility bill, etc.), child’s birth certificate/social security card and immunization records. Look for more information to come on the district website and Facebook page as the event gets closer for how to sign up for a spot for your child to be screened and to apply for a spot in the full day Pre-Kindergarten starting August 2024. Your child must attend Pre-K screenings if you would like them to be considered for a spot in August.
The district only has 20 available spots and the selection of the twenty students to attend will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, developmental delays, special needs, etc. Priority will be given to district four year olds. Once the four year old positions are filled, priority will be given to out-of-district four year olds next. The final decision regarding student enrollment will be at the discretion of the district teaching staff and administration. Those assigned spots will be informed the week following the application and screening dates.
Dress for the Weather!
Just a reminder that when the temperatures are cold, or there is snow on the ground, we will follow the guidelines below for allowing students to play outside:
- Students must have a coat. A hoodie is not enough when it is cold outside.
- Stocking hat and gloves - we have lots of extras at school so if your child needs one, please let either your child's teacher or the office know and we will get one for them.
- No shorts
- Students must have snow pants and snow boots in order to play in the snow.
What's Happening in PE?
In January we will be working on basketball skills at all levels. We will hone in and the proper mechanics of passing and shooting, getting ready for elementary basketball tournaments coming up. We will also complete our speed stacking unit. This is a fun one to see students improve and race their classmates as they work on hand-eye coordination.
December in the Library
December was full of Christmas cheer in the library as each student in kindergarten through sixth grade made an ornament that went along with a book or activity from library class this year. From kindergarten’s Little Blue Truck to sixth grade’s personalized Pixton ornaments, there was a lot of crafting happening! I love to hear my older students tell me that they still have every ornament we’ve made throughout the years. I hope that these will bring them fond memories of library with Mrs. Emerson long after they’re done at NH Elementary.
We will be switching gears in January by focusing on this year’s Show Me Award nominee picture books and keyboarding skills. Please encourage your kids to use the correct fingers if you see them typing at home. We want to create good habits when they’re young!
For the first time, we will be having a winter book fair January 23-26. We will be open during Literacy Night on January 24 if you would like to shop with your kids. This is not a BOGO book fair, but it will have all new book selections. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks!
Mrs. Leeper’s Readers
The students were kept very busy with their reading skills in December and are learning a lot from our new curriculum, Really Great Reading. They had a great time showing all they have learned during Middle of the Year Benchmark Testing. What wonderfully, hard working students we have at Nodaway-Holt. They have shown so many improvements in their reading skills!
5th and 6th Grade Band
Congratulations to all of the band kids for a great concert. They have worked very hard all semester and that hard work paid off. GREAT job, everyone!
5th graders will now be learning more notes on the Bb concert scale and starting to learn rhythms with eighth notes. 6th Graders will be learning about tetra scales and how to build the notes of all of the major scales. Both bands will be focusing on how to become really good at counting rhythms.
Reminder: all saxophone and clarinet students need to provide their own reeds. These can be purchased from Lanham Music in St. Joe, or Amazon online. We use Rico strength 2.5 for 5th grade and Rico strength 3.0 for 6th grade. For the brass players, they need to have a bottle of instrument oil to keep in their case. Both of these items make great stocking stuffers for Christmas!
What's Happening in Art?
It is second semester and time to start one of our most important art projects in grades K-12. We will be focusing on mental health and feelings, while preparing for the "I WILL LISTEN" exhibit at NWMSU. Each child will get to enter a work of art, and if chosen, their work will be on display at NWMSU. I will be sending out more information about that exhibit next month.
I feel very strongly that teaching our children about healthy outlets, such as art, is extremely important. Teaching this from an early age, can be huge in helping our students cope with stress and anxiety, as they encounter it in life.
Thank you for continuing to encourage your kids by celebrating their artwork.
Sing Along in Music!
I am so proud of our vocal students’ performances at the concert last month. They worked hard to not just sing but to perform. A big shout out to Mark Reinig for suppling and running his sound equipment. Thanks also go to our faculty for keeping me sane by changing up their schedules so we could rehearse together. And last but not least, kiddos to Mr. and Mrs. Reinig for directing an impressive instrumental concert.
